I started playing LoZ: The Minish Cap last weekend. Surprisingly the only exclusive handheld LoZ game I've played is ALBW on the 3DS. Trying to catch up on all of the other handheld titles with the Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. Will probably try and finish The Minish Cap this weekend. 😁

Yep, you've accurately described how Nintendo's 3DS Streetpass service works. This extension is the same concept, which is a novel and neat concept for the fediverse.

This is a really cool extension. 😀

Also cool it gets its naming inspiration from Nintendo's 3DS service of the same name. 😁

For anybody using Ubuntu, they've released an update that should patch it:

CVE-2024-6387 | Ubuntu

Ubuntu is an open source software operating system that runs from the desktop, to the cloud, to all your internet connected things.

Yes I agree, but I have seen one prominent member of the #fediverse and proponent of #FOSS advise against starting a self-hosted single-user instance, and I have seen a few people on Reddit say the same in the various fediverse related subreddits.

It seems weird to me too, and I wondered if it was a common opinion among more established fediverse users. Obviously I don't think you share that opinion based on your helpful guides showing people how to start their own single-user instances.

I agree, it's a good idea that new users to the #fediverse try and spread out a bit instead of crowd up on one large server.

On the flip side I have seen cases where people have advised others against spinning up their own self-hosted single-user instances, making statements such as "that's not what the fediverse is about" or "that doesn't help the fediverse grow".

So I'm kind of wondering if users are advised against joining massive servers and are also advised against hosting their own single-user instance, what is the "middle" ground and who's in charge of defining that?

I feel like this mentality can put people off from exploring the fediverse in general. In my mind people should be able to join the fediverse however they want and are comfortable with, and then have the information available to them on how to move around, as is written in @FediTips excellent guide https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/

A very awe-inspiring 3D visualization of the Pillars of Creation has been released by #NASA.

Green tea mostly, but love some occasional Chai tea with a splash of oat milk. Other than that, water.

I can share my experience with a self-hosted single-user Mastodon instance. I tried it back in 2020. I was unable to successfully run it on any Cloud VPS server that had less than 4GB of RAM and 2 vCPU. This cost me $20 USD per month (plus a few extra $$$ for automatic backups). When I tried to install it on a cheaper/lower-spec server, I could either not get past the installation without encountering Out of Memory errors, or I could get it running but anytime I tried to do something like add media to a post, I would get Out of Memory errors.

Nevertheless I tried it for a few months, but I decided to shut it down due to the $20+ USD per month price tag. It was during the Covid-19 pandemic and I had other monthly bills to focus on.

Fast-forward to 2024 and I wanted to try setting up a self-hosted single-user instance again, but without the high cost, so I went with another fediverse software compatible with ActivityPub. I'm running it on a server with only 1GB RAM and 1 vCPU which I'm currently paying $5 USD per month plus an extra $1 for automatic backups. The cost is more manageable for me and I haven't had any technical issues with it yet, it just works.

If you are looking to stay on Mastodon, there is a service called @mastohost and they have a plan that starts at $6 USD per month and is fully managed by @hugo. It looks pretty cool. Perhaps you can ask him about a self-hosted single-user instance on that Moon plan.
