@Toxic_Flange your LCD panel is only rated for a certain number of hours, and at the end of that lifespan it will be half as bright as it was when you bought it. Since LCDs turn on with almost no delay, you’re not waiting several seconds for them to warm up like you did with CRTs. That’s why most “screensavers” for Linux distros actually turn the screen off, in order to save wear on the panel.

@990000 this is an exact replica of the German concentration camp system. Farmers could 'rent' people imprisoned in these camps for daily labour for a fee. If the worker died during the renting time, they had to pay an extra fee. This system was not hidden from the german public. Locals gratefully took the job to 'take care' about the imprisoned people because it was well payed. Just the Nazi playbook...

There are people still working on plantations *right now*. We justify it as not being slavery because they make a few cents for their labor.

The obvious, but deeply unthinkable, answer to "but don't we need people to work those fields" is exactly the solution he has in mind. Slavery. That little wrinkle in our legal code that has allowed forced labor to persist in prisons spreads its hateful little disease. Proof once again that injustice for some of us is a threat to all of us.
