@Toxic_Flange your LCD panel is only rated for a certain number of hours, and at the end of that lifespan it will be half as bright as it was when you bought it. Since LCDs turn on with almost no delay, you’re not waiting several seconds for them to warm up like you did with CRTs. That’s why most “screensavers” for Linux distros actually turn the screen off, in order to save wear on the panel.

@Toxic_Flange no, the distros just assume that you don’t want to keep it on *at all* when you’re not using it. I’m not in charge of making decisions like that for any distro.
@cryptagion I'm certainly not turning off my computer when i go up to do a number 1, 2.. or 3.. or making lunch, or whatever. That extra hour or two of the screen on isn't going to reduce the lcd life a significant amount of the amount of 'life' it has in my home.
