A brief meditation on two radically different visions of existence: Heidegger’s resoluteness, where authenticity emerges through conscious confrontation with Being, and Spinoza’s conatus, the silent striving through which every entity persists in its existence. One is existential decision, the other ontological momentum. Yet both resist disappearance. Both insist on presence against the drift toward nothingness.
When the last ladle of a delicious, complicated Eintopf enters the finitude, the ready-to-handness of a sponge and detergent provides just enough of philosophical witt to handle everydayness with grace and patience.

Heidegger: Being and Time, section 42 on Care
Freya Mathews’ relational cosmophysicism, developed in The Ecological Self (1991), provides that ground. Every entity — from inorganic physical processes through organisms to human consciousness — possesses an innate conatus: an intrinsic striving to persist and realize itself according to its own nature.
This essay reads four thinkers — Thoreau, Lispector, Murdoch, and Stein — as stages in a phenomenological progression from solitude to empathy.

Heidegger's claim in §38 in Being and Time that Dasein is tempting to itself (versucherisch) inverts the ordinary logic of temptation. No external lure is required - the pull toward inauthenticity is structural, generated by Dasein's own thrownness into the das Man world. The poem attempts to hold this paradox: that the deepest temptation is not the world but the unlived self, the gap between the self one is and the self one could have been.
