Since alternative mastodon instances are closed to those of us who might be interested in joining them (lingo.lol, fediscience.org. tech.lgbt), I'm kindly asking those people on those servers to please please please NOT block/defederate servers like mastodon.social yet. Some of us want to transfer servers.

Normalization of nonlinearly time-dynamic vowels

Half my mastodon is cats and queer posts (with substantial overlap!), but the rest is linguistics and science stuff. So, I think we need a gay sciencecat instance now. Rainbow.sciencecat?

Let's say you have six models in an experiment that you want to report on. You can table the output stats (what everyone seems to want, nowadays) and put them in an appendix. But... should you also table to pairwise comparisons for each model? I kind of think that "show us every model!" is reaching some degree of absurdity nowadays.
But like, lingo.lol is apparently not blocking mastodon.social, like everyone is saying will happen. So, perhaps I'm not missing out?
If I migrate to a new instance, it's not clear to me which one to choose. lingo.lol is no longer accepting new people, fediscience prohibits posts in languages where translation is unavailable (basically making any posts in/discussing endangered languages impossible), and I kind of want the space I'm in to be sciency but also humanities and language y funciona bien si hablo español ou si je fais un post en français asì snáhánj nìh nej. ខ្ញុំទេីអែណា?

#Introduction

this is probably going out into the void on a very general server, but: hello! I am a phonetician and fieldworking linguist at the University at Buffalo working on languages of Cameroon and China. I am hoping to pre-empt things by rebuilding some social networks here even though I am late to the party (and so, locked out of all the linguist servers). where are we??

I'm an associate professor at the University at Buffalo who does research in articulatory & acoustic phonetics; corpus phonetics; tonal phonetics & phonology; prosody; and linguistic fieldwork. My fieldwork focuses mostly on Otomanguean languages in Mexico (Triqui, Mixtec varieties, Ixcatec). I'm an amateur pianist, poet, and hiker. I love fantasy fiction and cats. My husband refuses to get on social media, but Carmen doesn't mind.
