I'm an associate professor at the University at Buffalo who does research in articulatory & acoustic phonetics; corpus phonetics; tonal phonetics & phonology; prosody; and linguistic fieldwork. My fieldwork focuses mostly on Otomanguean languages in Mexico (Triqui, Mixtec varieties, Ixcatec). I'm an amateur pianist, poet, and hiker. I love fantasy fiction and cats. My husband refuses to get on social media, but Carmen doesn't mind.

It seems that I can use linear discriminant analysis to rank the relative importance of different frequency bands in measuring the degree of consonant lenition. The major predictor by far for the first linear discriminant is the low frequency (0 - 400 Hz) band (and that LD accounts for 85% of the variance). Since articulators are slow, most patterns of lenition are detectable by examining intensity changes in low frequency bands.
