The Australian advice is to separate plants with hardscaping. Choose less flammable species. Remove lower limbs from trees to reduce risk of a canopy ignition. Nothing flammable against the house (including fences).

Use a fire resistant roof (no tar shingles), and seal all gaps from embers. Most houses get destroyed by ember attack (unless you are in dense suburbia - then it's radiant ignition from your neighbours house burning).

A lovely video from Prof Dave Goulson on what plants to grow to attract butterflies into your garden in the UK. This year has been fantastic for butterflies on my allotment. Sometimes there has been up to 30 at any one time, not much work gets done on warm days.
