A gentle reminder to folks who are new to Mastodon. In solidarity with those in the disabled community who rely on screen readers, we ask that you:
* Add alt text/image descriptions when you post media
* Capitalize the first letter of every word in a hashtag #LikeThis
* Avoid emojis in your display name
UPDATE: So many great questions! Please check the replies to see if your question has been asked and answered β€οΈ

on behalf of myself and @agaitaarino. Whatever your instance, if you can afford it, maybe chip in? If not, send them some love at least! We're all suddenly demanding so much more of mastodon instances (and the fediverse in general), and this passes on a real cost, financial and headache-wise, to the many volunteer admins @socrates
probably worth being aware of the legal risks taken on when hosting a Mastodon instance: https://twitter.com/rahaeli/status/1593819064161665024

I'm hearing rumblings that WorldCat is falling apart, too. I tried to do a little searching and it does seem a bit of a mess. Anyone know what's going on over there?
Not sure how #Mastodon works? It's very simpleπ§΅
1) You sign up on one server. I suggest picking something based on your main interests. So, if you're in academia, maybe http://scholar.social or http://fediscience.org. You will have access to people on other servers, and you can also switch servers later on.

There are now no less than 56 curated lists of academics on Mastodon, in various subject areas, on this GitHub, as well as links to groups, preprint and bibliography bots, and servers/communities. Check it out, tell others about it, and bookmark it for future reference! https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon
Please note: I am *NOT* the maintainer of this GitHub! Please contact "@ [email protected]" (*without* the space in between!). Here's a direct link to his profile: https://scholar.social/@hendrikerz.

I tried to talk to the admins of mastodon.scot #Fediblock
They are unwilling to understand that they have created a cop-friendly space (there are actual police officers on that instance) and that this is at odds with the safety of queer people and other minorities
Scholar will be suspending that instance and recommending that others do so as well
