English professor, book historian. Nineteenth-century, mostly. Writing about medical books, erotic books, and print moving around. Currently obsessed with compilations. Always interested in "bad books" and "bad writing"
Getting a valentine often had a very different vibe in the Victorian era, the heyday of the viciously satirical "vinegar valentine." https://www.metmuseum.org/perspectives/articles/2024/02/comic-valentines

New post on the British Library's Knowledge Matters blog: 'Knowledge under attack'

'The people responsible for this cyber-attack stand against everything that libraries represent: openness, empowerment, and access to knowledge.'

https://blogs.bl.uk/living-knowledge/2023/12/knowledge-under-attack.html

And crucially, for my peeps: 'From early in the new year you will begin to see a phased return of certain key services, starting with the most crucial of all, our main catalogue, a reference-only version of which will be back online from 15 January, further facilitating the manual ordering which is already available in our Reading Rooms. Other interim services will include increased on-site access to our manuscripts and special collections, and a bespoke inter-library loan capability designed to serve key sectors such as health, higher education and law.'

*lets out a long-held breath*

I love that bookbinders’ boards made from re-used paper signal both paper dearth (not enough new paper because not enough rags for furnish) and paper surplus (so much ephemeral print being made that much can be instantly repurposed.) It’s not at all unusual to find re-used printed music in a pressboard case, but I’m pretty sure this (1st edition of Walter Scott, The Betrothed, 1825) is manuscript music, probably from 1/2 #bookhistory #mediastudies
