Reading the news of media outlets closing, big names in AI quitting their job and thinking, mmm maybe capitalism will end up eating itself. Problem is, will everything else be eaten away with it?
The #AI #ChatGPT #Bard etc story repeats the #Bitcoin story in terms of how it will impact society. They are built on the kernel of a useful idea, but their structures heavily preference harmful use cases. #Bitcoin enabled #ransomware, tax fraud, investment scams, dodging sanctions, while only providing a slow, energy intensive payment system. #AI texts enable #disinfo, #cheating at school/work, #TechnicalDebt, devaluation of human labor, all to provide an #climate-damaging, error-prone search

While pandemic, fascism, and onrushing genocides, not to mention the billionaire-class's efforts to steal even that which is nailed down are taking the headlines, the climate news keeps ticking by in the background. Some of it is good, very good even — this is really entirely a question of political will now — but most of it isn't.

As someone in her 40s now, looking at the likelihood of a 4°C 2100 continue to creep up, what does it mean to live in probably the last generation that will not see the end of globally-organized civilization?

Not in terms of offsets or recycling or all the other things we're supposed to do to be good people instead of doing something useful like shooting an oil executive, but culturally. What does it mean as an artist, an intellectual, a person-who-lives-in-culture? What does one do differently if one is going to be last?

Why is taking care of another person less valuable than taking care of a machine? Feminist researchers challenge the old ‘self-evident facts’ of economics

"That is why we must talk about feminism in economics. In a democracy, money and power need to be critically examined."

"Feminist economists have argued that care should be seen in state budgets as an investment instead of an expense."

Virpi Salmi, Hanna Ylöstalo, Heini Kinnunen (also Finnish version)

Why is taking care of another person less valuable than taking care of a machine? Feminist researchers challenge the old ‘self-evident facts’ of economics

Feminist research is often considered ideological and therefore unsuitable or wrong. However, in Hanna Ylöstalo’s view, traditional economics, in which capitalism is taken for granted, is just as ideological; people just don’t say it out loud. In journalist Virpi Salmi’s article, Ylöstalo and other researchers in the Femtie project explain how they combine research and activism.

We talk to @poemproducer about language, sound, and the body. At their intersection, the voice emerges, with its multiple resonances and different ways of introducing the voice of others through her own practice and space of visibility.👂

Along the way, we look at her work and methodology, from the deconstruction of texts to the implementation of what she calls #feministsonictechnologies.

How can soundscapes be used as a way to attend to forest life and the many different ways that we narrate and relate to forests?

The forestscapes project aims to explore and document generative arts-based methods for recomposing collections of sound materials to support “collective inquiry” into forests as living cultural landscapes.

As part of the project we have an open call for folders of forest sounds.
