Mixed feelings about the #HaLongBay, #Vietnam.

The thousands of limestone karsts indeed deserve to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, they’re heavily marketed and thousands of tourists are processed assembly-line-style.

The coast boasts hundreds of luxury resorts, constructed by a Chinese conglomerate which apparently recently went bust, so it seems to be on-hold. But if filled with tourists, I don’t see how the pristine nature could remain so.

More views of the Tam Coc UNESCO World Heritage Site at #NinhBinh, #Vietnam.

This perspective really shows the extent of both the rice fields and the limestone hills. One appreciates it even more after getting soaking wet from sweat on the way to this viewpoint…

Day 2 of #NinhBinh, northern #Vietnam.

The boat rides at Trang An UNESCO World Heritage Site are quite touristy, but for a very good reason - incredible, unspoiled #nature.

The timing was unfortunate: on a Sunday with many domestic tourists. Good for them 👍, but impossible to avoid the crowds. Therefore we skipped the Tam Coc boat tour and instead explored the region riding a bicycle, with endless rice fields on one side and limestone cliffs on the other.

Someone put a lot of time and money into this extremely detailed replica of the 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 time machine from Back to the Future. It's probably not their daily driver. They probably only drive it.... from time to time.

Technically not really #Hiking as part of the tour was at a well-known tourist site of #HangMua of northern #Vietnam , but breathtaking #nature nevertheless.

The whole region has many roads / pathways between limestone hills and hundreds of lakes. Among them quite a few villages and many scattered restaurants catering to tourists. Still, the vibe is quite authentic and unspoiled. Great for biking and hiking.

Hope to do a boat tour in the next days.

So true…

Found and visited the pub on a recommendation from @EllenInEdmonton. And it was excellent, especially on a warm, rainy day. Thank you Fediverse!

#Hiking in the countryside around Da Nang, #Vietnam .

This region suffered disastrous floods just a few months ago. Although it’s technically dry season now, due to climate change there is still a lot of rain.

We got a few dry hours in the morning, walked through rice fields, dense forests and some streams, but soon it started raining agan. We sought refuge in a local village, had some Vietnamese (rice) pancakes and took a Grab ride back to the hotel.

I call it a nice day.

Whenever you hear "ban for kids" on the internet, read in reality "ID collection by a sketchy third-party company that will definitely use it or leak it or both for every adult."

Because that's what this truly means.
Also, it doesn't even help the kids.
