Snyder et al. report that hippocampal neurons in Egyptian fruit bats modulate their activity depending on the position and identity of human experimenters when bats are flying and encode experimenter position and identity when bats are stationary.
If you're at #FENS2024 come say hi tomorrow morning! (PS01-26AM-003)
We can chat about population drift in the entorhinal cortices and hippocampus during free exploration and sensory minimized conditions 😊🌻🐀
Remember to drop by my poster tomorrow morning! While you're there check out the 8 awesome posters surrounding me from the #Moser group.

How are events segmented and organized in time? And how might this impact our perception and memory? Check out our work here on how neural trajectories in the lateral entorhinal cortex inherently drift over time, but abruptly shift at event boundaries to discretize a continuous experience. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.06.17.599402v1 https://x.com/EdvardMoser/status/1802967173196808557 #Events #Time #Timing #Memory #Dynamics #Experience #Circuits #EntorhinalCortex #Hippocampus #AnimalBehavior #Preprint
The technique, which measures calcium currents as a proxy for neuronal firing, sometimes reports unusual and potentially misleading waves of activity in the hippocampus.

Fact gem of the day (#2): the ecstatic auras of Fyodor Dostoevsky
You probably know that Dostoevsky wrote Crime and Punishment, as well as the Brothers Karamazov. Did you also know that he had a unique form of epilepsy? In his case, the ramp up to a seizure was "a happiness unthinkable in the normal state and unimaginable for anyone who hasn’t experienced it."
It's called an "ecstatic aura."
Ecstatic epilepsy is a rare form of focal epilepsy in which the aura (beginning of the seizures) consists of a blissful state of mental clarity/feeling of certainty. Such a state has also been described as a “religious” or mystical experience. ...
