@Viz hi there, saw your job search post. I'm not a hiring manager anymore, but my peers are still hiring at https://aledade.com/current-opportunities

I know it's a total change of industry, but times are weird; maybe something appeals to you.

Ignore the cities in each posting, the company is fully remote (though continental US only for patient privacy reasons...I think you're in PA?)

Anyway, wherever you end up, I hope your job search ends well and soon.

@bodhipaksa @cstross @kalleboo Beyond 80/20, efficiency and resilience directly trade off with each other. Idle resources waiting to satisfy a demand vs queued demand waiting for a resource.

A system optimized for "efficiency" had no duplicate performers of any function. Everything is a single point of failure, and that single performer is an Indy 500 racecar needing a full pit crew and methanol fuel.

A _fully_ efficient system stops being effective: you 80/20 the userbase you serve.

You are here.

Conservatism’s fundamental attribution error: assuming success implies merit while failure implies moral deficiency. It’s a “secular” prosperity gospel where market outcomes are treated as divine judgments despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

I made a resource!

The Praxic Compendium is a collection of elements from and for TTRPGs - cycles of play, ways authority can be divided, dice-rolling conventions and outputs, ways prep might be done, etc.

It's intended to help you draft games faster, reduce the time spent searching through other books for "How did this game do it?" and "what else could I try?".

It's copyright-free; paste the bits right into your draft to rewrite as much or as little as you need.

Since whenever I talk about #Python and #Docker, I invariably get told that virtual environments inside of Docker make no sense, I’ve spent my weekend writing down why I think it does.

I don’t intend or expect to convince everybody, but I hope to add nuance to the discussion: https://hynek.me/articles/docker-virtualenv/

Why I Still Use Python Virtual Environments in Docker

Whenever I publish something about my Python Docker workflows, I invariably get challenged about whether it makes sense to use virtual environments in Docker containers. As always, it’s a trade-off, and I err on the side of standards and predictability.

Here's a #ttrpg with adorable #art that also lets you do some coloring: #BeakFeatherAndBone with art by Austin Breed. This is a #GMless world-building game. Each player takes on a faction, describing buildings important to them and creating NPCs opposed to them. At the end, you have a complex city ready for PCs to interact with. In addition to having the players color in buildings, I like to give them a print out of their faction artwork so they can color that in too.

My short comic DESERT BIRDS is now free to read! :D

A grizzled old cowboy stalks another man across the haunted desert, heckled by vultures who speak through corpses.
