Astronomer, Mi'kmaw, Newfoundland & Labrador, Professor,
On my way home after a productive and interesting conference IAUS399 “Indigenous Astronomy in the Space Age” https://www.archaeoastronomy.org/iaus399. Lots of good discussion about Archaeoastronomy, ethnoastronomy, decolonizing #astronomy and more. I gave a talk on Indigenizing the Drake equation that was kindly received. I am grateful to the organizers, Elders and knowledge keepers for such a good conference.

Very excited to be travelling to Australia to participate in the IAU Symposium “Indigenous Astronomy in the Space Age” https://www.archaeoastronomy.org/iaus399. This should be an amazing learning experience.

Almost ready for the Total #Solar #Eclipse in the Town of Gander on April 8 for the Gander Solar Eclipse Soirée #astronomy.
This episode of Backbench was an useful description of how provinces have messed up university funding and how sessional faculty are victims of the crumbling systems. This is why we continue to need a #FairDealAtMUN for everyone. https://www.canadaland.com/podcast/84-failing-universities-101/
#84 Failing Universities 101

Canadian universities are barely scraping by. Queen’s is in a whole lot of debt, Laurentian declared insolvency in 2021, Alberta universities are slashing budgets, and McGill and Concordia are in danger over an out-of-province tuition battle.

The 2024 Elizabeth R. Laird Lecture is coming up and it features the awesome Dr. Anna O’Grady talking about “Twists and Turns While Searching for Strange Stars". This looks to be a great #Astronomy public talk at the Johnson GeoCentre in St. John’s #yyt on March 14. https://facebook.com/events/s/elizabeth-r-laird-public-lectu/307933308567235/

It is great working with my research team and students for our first #Astronomy Hack day at MemorialU where the students started building websites, outreach ideas and more.
I’ve been mostly off these sites for a while due to a number of reasons. I’m trying to be active again on this and other sites under the same name. You can see more about me in my bio.
Right now it’s #astronomy, #eclipses, #SETI, #darkskies, #wine,#whiskey, #chess and more.
#academicchatter #academicmastodon question - How do you communicate with collaborators about deadlines and commitments after a significant personal event, where they may know nothing or some about it? How do you get back into academic work?
My father passed away a month ago (I’m not looking for condolences.) I am finding it hard to get back to work and catch up on commitments, especially when I received messages like “condolences, when can you send me x?”
