Finally had time to continue working on this (classes and tests have kept me super busy), and I managed to figure out how to make the eyes look good.
The trick was to focus on adding stuff around the eyes that are supposed to be there (eyebrows and eyelashes) because without them, no matter what I did, it wouldn't look right.
Just one of those things the human brain does I guess.
