"The fact that the EU interior ministers want to exempt police officers, soldiers, intelligence officers and even themselves from chat control scanning proves that they know exactly just how unreliable and dangerous the snooping algorithms are that they want to unleash on us citizens."

Leak: EU interior ministers want to exempt themselves from chat control bulk scanning of private messages

According to the latest draft text of the controversial EU Child Sexual Abuse Regulation proposal leaked by the French news organisation Contexte, EU interior ministers want to exempt professional accounts of staff of intelligence agencies, police and military from the envisaged scanning of chats and messages (Article 1 (2a)). The regulation should also not apply […]

Congress continues to push for censorship bills to "protect the kids" online rather than passing comprehensive privacy laws that would protect all users from predatory data gathering and sales that target us for advertising and abuse.

We detail what a comprehensive data privacy law should look like here at https://eff.org/privacyfirst

To Address Online Harms, We Must Consider Privacy First

In this report, we outline how many of the internet's ills have one thing in common: they're based on the business model of widespread corporate surveillance online. Dismantling this system would not only be a huge step forward to our digital privacy, it would raise the floor for serious discussions about the internet's future.

Is it possible to go viral on Mastodon yet? For science boost this post for me.

⚠️ We have just released important security fixes for the #Mastodon server software. Versions 4.1.3, 4.0.5, 3.5.9, as well as a new nightly are available now to make upgrading quick and painless. Please upgrade as soon as possible!

I'm slightly irritated by #mastodon clients. I don't remember seeing any client that would show what you have read and what you haven't. Things kind of work if the client doesn't scroll back to latest toot.

If it does jump to latest toot, I have to first read toots first in reverse order. When I arrive to latest toot that I read last time, I have to scroll up until I find the place that I last read before going through the old toots and then reverse the reading order again.

Slack seem to combine best of both worlds. If you're falling behind, there's button you can press it to jump to latest posts. It keeps quite good track where you were and on top of that, there's clearly visible line that shows where the last message you read is.

Too bad #whalebird hasn't cloned those features from Slack, even when it's Slack clone.

Not that Microsoft understands these things either, Teams doesn't remember where you were and the line is bit too low contrast so it's easy to miss.

How app changelogs should be vs. how app changelogs usually are.
I think all those “How to Mastodon” articles are going about it all wrong. They start by explaining federation and talking about how to choose a server. Yes that’s the first step but it’s also where we lose people. Just put that aside. Start by talking about how you use Mastodon, all the great apps, the culture, etc. Then end with the first step, that “all you have to do is pick a server to get started” and explain how. You have to hook a fish before you can reel it in.
