Linux continues to be above 4% on the desktop

According to the StatCounter, Linux on the desktop has continued to rise and remains above 4%, with this being the healthiest it's ever looked on the desktop.

@gamingonlinux It's about time for #steamos to happen on desktop machines officially ... #steam #valve #linux

@AndyGER @gamingonlinux SteamOS3, to be exact ;)

Previous iteration, debian-based, was available already :)

@ozone89 @gamingonlinux But not officially, right? I haven't read about it yet. Steam said that they wanted to publish their Steam OS officially for as many x86 platforms as possible.

When this happens, a mini PC with an AMD CPU/GPU unit would be cool ... :-)

@AndyGER @gamingonlinux SOS2 was officially available at the time, albeit now discontinued

SOS3, the one on the Deck, is not, and I agree on putting it on a dedi machine :)

SteamOS

SteamOS is Valve’s Linux-based operating system. It features a seamless user experience optimized for gaming, while retaining access to the power and flexibility of a PC, and plays tens of thousands of games on Steam. SteamOS officially ships on Steam Deck, and will soon ship with certain Legion Go S models. We’re currently working on adding support for more devices.

@gamingonlinux The trend looks exponential.

Gosh let’s hope.

@gamingonlinux I'm hoping I can help increase that graph myself... Just need explicit sync to be finalized in the Nvidia drivers, and I should be good to go.

@gamingonlinux « For those thinking it may be due to Steam Deck with SteamOS, it's unlikely, at least not directly. StatCounter gather their info from web traffic across over 1.5 million sites globally. I doubt all that many browse the web regularly on Deck. »

That's what I was going to ask and the weakness of this count even if I'm not sure it changes things drastically. Personally, I consult the Steam site thru a (work shh) Windows, but I play on my Linux PC where I only launch the client.

@gamingonlinux @claudiom it’s how i play nearly all my games. so glad steam is available and reliably runs
@gamingonlinux In my case, the Steam Deck definitely had an indirect effect. I loved using desktop mode so much that I made the switch on my main PC too.

@gamingonlinux

Part of that 4% might be my Mint desktop!

@gamingonlinux I know that this year I had went to my Linux box as my virtually only desktop.

My laptop I take to game will probably get swapped over as I got it in 2018. With some dork ups (Like my Diablo, SC2, and WoW not working right, when it had been) I've not had to do anything to game on my windows box (which is also the older, not upgraded machine)

I imagine many people feel the same way. I used to use my linux box for productivity and exploration, and win for gaming. Not so much nw

@gamingonlinux I hope this gets better. Neither Mac nor Windows is usable.
