A baby ambush bug sitting on a blackberry. I came close to popping the berry into my mouth, but noticed the speck of white just in time.

In bizarro beetle news, Vinicius Ferreira and others just published a description of a species from Mexico in which males have NO ELYTRA (and no wings). They named it Xenomorphon baranowskii, referencing the Xenomorph of 'Alien' fame, and Richard Baranowski, the collector. It's very strange. That, and the genus name, will likely ensure that it will show up soon in a Tuesday New York Times blurb. Image was provided by lead author, Vinicius S. Ferreira. #beetle #insect #coleoptera #entomology #lycidae #biology #xenomorph #alien
Want to help the bees?
1. Stop using pesticides. This includes "green" pesticides and mosquito misters.
2. Plant a diversity of flowers, if you have space.
3. If you have land, leave some bare patches, as most native bees are soil-nesters.
4. Leave dead trees and plants to stand for the wood and twig-nesting species.
5. Vote against politicians who are insensitive to environmental concerns. You know the ones. Out with them.
6. Vote for politicians who expand protected areas.
I'm not sure what's elegant about the Elegant Tarantula Hawk, Pepsis menechma. Males have antennae that look like someone stuck a pair of yellow foam pool noodles on its head. (New photo from Austin this weekend).
