It seems that process has now come full circle. To use Delta Chat, people are expected to set up a dedicated email account for it, and connect to a specialist server running their ChatMail package or something similar. So it has no UX advantage to balance out the many disadvantages it has compared to XMPP or Matrix apps.

Thanks DC, it's been a good run. Guess I better start looking through F-Droid for another mobile email app. Any recommendations?

Google announced that as of September 2026, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first registering centrally with Google. This registration will involve:

- Paying a fee to Google
- Agreeing to Google’s Terms and Conditions
- Providing government identification
- Uploading evidence of the developer’s private signing key
- Listing all current and future application identifiers

Keep Android Open

Advocating for Android as a free, open platform for everyone to build apps on.

The UK has announced plans to fast-track legislation requiring “age verification for VPN use”. The correct term, however, is not age verification but identity verification.

A law like this would require everyone to identify themselves in order to use a VPN. This would pose a risk to whistleblowers, violate human rights, and represent yet another step toward an authoritarian society.

Joined back to Matrix to see what had improved. I would say it's still a bit buggy and slow, but overall I feel it became more mature. And then I was curious to check various github repositories related to Matrix development and... Wow. The other competitors, like #deltachat or #xmpp will not be able to compete with that speed of development. I bet that in the next couple of years Matrix will become a dominant messaging platform, at least among other #decentralized options.

Not even one month after the last release, there is a new one - Kaidan 0.15 with audio/video calls and integrated search fields 🚀

Gave #matrix a try. Installed #synapse, #elementweb, #cinny on my RPi, and #fluffychat on mobile. SNI proxy on a VPS routes traffic to the home server to keep secret keys secret (yep, HTTPS everywhere makes no sense if everyone keeps their secrets in cloud)

What a bloatware! It's lame and messy. I'm afraid to show it to normies who I want to communicate with me.

No, no, no. This guy was right https://マリウス.com/giving-up-on-element-and-matrixorg/ XMPP is our everything.

Yuck.

Giving Up on Element & Matrix.org

The Matrix.org network has great potential, but after years of dealing with glitches, slow performance, poor UX, and one too many failures, I’m done with it.

I guess helpful comments will be appreciated. If anyone has a suggestion, I can add it to the issue.

Happy Jabber Day 🎂 🥳

On January 4, 1999, Jabber was first announced to the public¹.

Twenty-seven years later, Jabber—or XMPP, as it became known after standardization through the #IETF—remains the only truly vendor-independent, federated instant messaging platform.

In almost three decades, XMPP has never stopped evolving and remains our best tool for digital independence.
