Here’s the thing about elitism. Getting in is about luck and charisma as much as competence. It’s all about impressing the right people.

On some level, folks on the inside know this, but it makes them uncomfortable. They need to believe they deserve their position, that they got into power by brilliance, not dumb luck and connections.

This primes them to become filters. They defend their self image by judging others, and keeping out folks who don’t have the “right stuff,” like they do. But they are not super competent, and they have limited visibility, so this is mostly a vibe check, if we’re being honest.

Truth is, there are vastly more people who could do these elite jobs, but will never get the chance. They may even have better ways to do it, but we’ll never know, because we filter out the folks who don’t fit the mold.

Elitism is about artificial scarcity. Which means, ultimately, it’s about concentrating wealth and power.
