Attending faraway conferences is ecologically unsustainable, and creates a huge barrier to entry for people who are disabled, have care duties, or lack resources, among others.
One piece of the solution is to create local satellites of major conferences. This idea has been successfully implemented in Paris for #NeurIPS for a few years, and I'm happy to have joined the advising committee of NeurIPS@Paris (Dec 4&5 this year)

Recently I worked on a project that intends to develop a 'next-generation' or 'best-in-class' therapeutics. Drugs available in this field fail in some aspects either low efficacy or high tox. What surprises me is in principle some of the ideas behind these drugs are 'too good to be true' even by outdated standards, but companies still put billions of dollars into developing them. I feel like we can better utilize the $$$.
Quantification issue: when we develop therapeutics especially antibodies to membrane targets, we desire to quantify the target density on the cell surface. In the old days, this was done by quant-beads/flow cytometry. Unfortunately, the standardization of detection antibodies against quant-beads is painful. Any progress in this field? Thanks.
@kristine_willis kind of. But I want more abstract, rigorous, and standardized ones that can be used in Word or PowerPoint if they exist.
Is there a set of standard biological symbols we can use in Microsoft Word/PowerPoint? Symbols like "two molecules interacting with each other", "molecule A inhibits molecule B", etc. Thanks.
@Margaret_Mikellides To single out one specific pathway to solving the aging problem seems too good to be true. Aging is so complex that with the current understanding, I would rather choose a fuzzy target that impacts multiple pathways. But I agree that metabolic is probably one of the druggable angles (the other is neuroinflammation).
