Often called blind snakes, Rena have vestigial eyes, as they spend much of their lives underground. Their diet includes ants and termites, along with their eggs and larvae. So my grand niece, Scarlett and I take frequent walks in the desert. Scarlett calls me Tio, Spanish for uncle
We talk about the plants in the desert and today we were talking about Ocotillos and I showed her one.
She turns around and looks at me seriously and says. “Tio, Where is the Ocoscarlett?" So from this day on the large, former Ocotillo in our front yard is the world’s only Ocoscarlett. Apt name, since it turns scarlet in the spring.
