How big a table do you need for your jigsaw puzzle?

Jigsaw puzzles are typically labeled with their finished area and number of pieces. With this information, is it possible to estimate the area required to lay each piece flat before assembly? We derive a simple formula based on two-dimensional circular packing and show that the unassembled puzzle area is $\sqrt{3}$ times the assembled puzzle area, independent of the number of pieces. We perform measurements on 9 puzzles ranging from 333 cm$^2$ (9 pieces) to 6798 cm$^2$ (2000 pieces) and show that the formula accurately predicts realistic assembly scenarios.

Frankenstein's monster & Dracula were Union organizers?

Boris Karloff, who played Frankenstein's monster, along with Bela Lugosi who played Dracula, were founding members of the actors' Union, Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

Both men actively recruited Actors and Actresses to join the then unrecognized Union (between 1933 and 1937).

It was not uncommon to see Karloff in full monster makeup, handing out applications to join the Screen Actors Guild.

The #antisemitism directed at American Jews isn't only vile but it's also totally misplaced. Overwhelming majorities of us oppose settlements and favor the creation of a Palestinian state. Most of us hate Bibi and this Israeli gov. Israel ranks as our 10th most important issue, out of 14, in J Street polling.

It's fucking maddening. But I guess it's always the case that "dumb bigot" is redundant.
