@eniko Honestly I would just assume it's a holdover from the first couple months when Notch was doing all the code and they just never dedicated resources to do it in a better way.

What if I just went overboard and designed a survival system where food has specific nutritional values beyond just "Restores 50 Hunger" or "1500 kCal" and you have to actually pay attention to what you're eating to make sure you have enough protein and vitamin C etc.
