This site leans on the darker side of the news these days.
A reminder that Mastodon has great filters and you are not obligated to shoulder all of the world's ills. Maybe you come here to be reminded of the good things in this world. It is ok to visit Preferences/Filters, and reduce your exposure to things that make you angry, sad, upset by filtering out words and phrases of things that hurt your mental health.

Plus the constant shopping Holidays with incessant ads and discounts. The pressure to buy now while it’s on sale! Hurry! Before it’s too late! It will go on sale again, it always does.

Those of us living in the Global North are part of the most wasteful, careless, short-sighted culture in the history of the world. We buy too much, eat too much, and throw away far too much. But there’s a reason for this.

While it’s true that consumers are responsible for their own choices, do not lose sight of the fact that capitalists have pushed consumer demand onto the masses with incessant invasive advertising and egregious planned obsolescence, along with organized propaganda in schools and in the media about the unquestionable value of economic growth.

We didn't get here by accident. It's not simply 'human nature'. It's the result of deliberate manipulative effort made by greedy capitalists, supported by their flunkies in government.
