@willmckinley I enjoyed his performance in The Man Who Fell to Earth. Such a wide-ranging career.

Sixth Advent Window.

The Feast of St Nicholas & the Polar Bear had settled into his corner seat in the bar of Hegbom's hotel in Tromsø. He ordered a søttøl, a sweet beer which tasted of juniper & took out a little notebook, to cross off the presents he'd bought in the market that morning.

I’ve read a clutch of sad, beautiful works of speculative #fiction over the last few years, most notably Sandra Newman’s The Heavens and Ling Ma’s Severance. Sequoia Nagamatsu’s How High We Go in the Dark now joins their ranks. Nagamatsu’s novel-in-stories chronicles a climate change–fueled pandemic that catalyzes profound scientific advancements but at enormous costs. My favorite of the stories, “Pig Son,” gutted me. #sf #sciencefiction
@benjamin_oc Thanks for this recommendation, which introduced me to the book. Truly did not expect the tenderness and heart of “Pig Son.” Such a thoughtfully crafted world, from the morbid humor of the funerary-based economy to the relationships among the characters struggling against loss and uncertainty, forging and rekindling broken relationships.

Hi friends, would you consider boosting my earlier post (link below) so people in the Los Angeles area get to see it? Thank you!

It's about a live stage performance of the musical "Sweeney Todd" that's happening this weekend! (My son is one of the performers and I'd love for them to have a great turnout)

@jonhelmkamp This isn’t a specific recipe recommendation, but a friendly reminder not to forget about your local library. I’m in Southern California, and my libraries have a lot of vegan recipe books (and magazines) available digitally through their apps. It’s a good way to try them out and sample all types of cuisine.

You're probably already aware that the Sun, moon, and other objects appear to rise and set in different places each day. Due to the axial tilt of the Earth and our orbit, the geometry of our planets surroundings in the solar system is always changing. With the changing of the seasons the sunset/sunrise and moonset/moonrise shift north or south. This image is a composite of two consecutive sunsets as a way to demonstrate the difference just a day makes.

I've read reviews and comments with variations on #WakandaForever being a love letter to Chadwick Boseman.

It's a tribute and homage to Chadwick, but it's a love letter to Black women, *especially* dark skinned Black women.

I think there's less than 10 minutes where a Black woman wasn't central to the scene, and present on screen.

It's also feels like a deeply respectful acknowledgment of the oppression and trauma we share with Indigenous peoples in this hemisphere.

Passes #BechdelTest, too

In the last year, screenwriter Todd Alcott’s hobby has blown up into a legit side career. This Etsy seller isn’t peddling kombucha SCOBYs, letter pressing new baby announcements, or repurposing old barns for use as cutting boards.

Kumail Nanjiani is a delight to interview. On this week’s show, we talk about playing a part he hesitated to take in Welcome to Chippendales. (He shape-shifted again.)
Plus Matt Belloni and I discuss the saga of two Bobs.

Actor Kumail Nanjiani on accepting a non-comedic role | The Business

After writing and starring in the film “The Big Sick” in 2017, actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani says writer-director and producer Robert Siegel (“Pam and Tommy,” “Big Fan,” “The Wrestler”) approached him with an idea to make a drama film about…
