Look, I know AI is controversial, but just for a moment, let's set aside our preconceived notions, our biases, the environmental impact, the massive cost to train and run models, the labor exploitation, the intellectual property theft, the inaccuracies, the mania it causes in users, the destruction of search, the deskilling of professionals, the devaluation of creative work, job losses, and lack of economic value from enterprise implementations.

Wait, what were we talking about?

Scale AI routinely uses public Google Docs to track work for high-profile customers like Google, Meta, and xAI, leaving multiple AI training documents labeled "confidential" accessible to anyone with the link.

If you're on mastodon.social, you might want to move your account to a different server:

The Fediverse is protected from takeover as long as we are spread out on many servers. If one server dominates, takeovers become easier.

Mastodon.social is currently 25.5% of the active Fediverse. This proportion is way too large and seems to be increasing.

Larger servers also tend to have worse moderation and are harder to defederate, threatening safety.

Things that give me hope:

Abused and neglected animals can not only learn to trust again, but become outrageously goofy and loyal companions, just from a little love and compassion.

Abused and neglected humans can and often do this too, and choose to raise their offspring better than they were raised.

Add to the list anything that sparks hope and joy for you, no matter how small.

🚨 We're still in need of more #snowflake extensions to help keep Iranians connected during this critical time.

If you're able, please consider running a Tor Snowflake proxy. This simple and safe action can make a significant difference in ensuring Iranians stay online. #KeepItOn

hottest day of the year and she's in her sleeping bag. my cat is part lizard.

#catsofmastodon

@molly0xfff I started my day on the patio to touch grass before the heat kicked in fully. I gave up at 90 degrees. My cat came in around the 95 mark.
They really like warm places
@molly0xfff my most missed Archimedes always preferred the hottest places he could find. My other cats like our greenhouse, but stayed mostly out of the direct sunlight. Not Archimedes, though. He wanted to bake as much as he could.

@jared @molly0xfff

beautiful and cute fluff ball! 🥰

@jared @molly0xfff My previous cat would climb to the bitumen roof of neighbour's garage and bake herself up there on sunny days.
@molly0xfff Cats definitely love the heat a lot more than us. Must be their desert heritage.

@ainmosni @molly0xfff It's because their bodies developed for minimal energy usage at a time. They conserve as much as possible basically. That means lazing around for a huge portion of the day, then short bursts of zoomies when they get pent up energy. They also run a slightly higher body temperature, so basically this lets their bodies relax still within safe margins normally.

Though, that said, with some of the heat waves going on right now, outside may still be dangerous even for cats for prolonged periods of time.

@molly0xfff she found a place safe from the sun’s baleful regard
@molly0xfff Funny! One of our cars is in the heated bed today! 😺
@molly0xfff My cats keep asking me to lift up a big fleece blanket so they can climb under it. They usually change their minds and want out after about 5 minutes.
@molly0xfff they do have a slightly higher operating temperature, after all

This home has a whippet, he’s exactly the same. He has, naturally, very little body insulation so I guess he cools off quickly but he sure does feel hot when it exits from under the duvet or his (simular) bed.
@guardeddon @molly0xfff My whippet will be panting underneath a blanket in the sun, but insist on getting covered up again if he moves.
And I have to keep a gap in the blackout curtains for my cat to access the windowsill for afternoon sun.
