In our kick-off event, we want to do a little game/puzzle with our new first semester students. They are from computer science and data science study programs, but in general, they cannot code yet. We are now searching for ideas for such a game/puzzle that thematically is close to computer science or mathematics. (There are plenty of ideas for general team-building events, of course.)
The most problematic constraint: We have about 400 students. They are in groups of about 60 people (one per study program) which would give about 10 teams per group. Any game/puzzle -- especially if it uses analogue material -- has to scale up to these numbers. E.g. a maths-themed scavenger hunt across campus is probably not possible. And we really want to have a meat-space component instead of a fully online game/puzzle.

So.. Has anyone done something at that scale that is explicitly maths-/comp-sci-flavoured and can give me an idea?

The EPFL community gets a Mastodon server

EPFL has set up a Mastodon server for the School community, allowing members to post and share content in a way that’s aligned with the values of open science. We opted for Mastodon because independence and effective communication tools are critical.

Just had to do this... and it took way too much effort lol. Enjoy

Sonos CEO Patrick Spence steps down after disastrous app launch

Patrick Spence is no longer the CEO of Sonos. His decision last year to prematurely release a new app, plagued by bugs and missing features, ultimately cost him his job.

@ionica Today’s poem celebrates Fibonacci Day. It’s called ‘Word Crunching’.

I finally figured out how to turn off predictive text in my work email app, which might have been contributing to the utter exhaustion I feel when I'm trying to email. I'm constantly having to avoid accidentally writing "With love" to the dean or whatever. Who thought it was a good idea to constantly be pre-writing random words and plopping them down in front of your cursor while you're trying to think about what you're trying to say? It's like screaming numbers at someone trying to do math.

@spinach
@timsweeney@threads.net Fortnite X ActivityPub when?
And yes, instead of pinging any of the parody accounts here, I tried to ping a non-existing account on Threads of what it could be from the actual Tim Sweeney
Let me just ping the actual Tim Sweeney and I'll do a backflip while hanging
@TimSweeneyEpic@x.com
@spinach i feel like the top row should have been "is based off of misskey", the middle row being any activitypub software, and the bottom being any software

i assume it would have been too difficult to find another non-misskey related AP software (even including email and xmpp software) that ends in or even contains "key" though
@spinach tfw no "Lost my keys" is a misskey fork.

@spinach

A misskey fork must be activitypub compliant software
