No #bash command has helped me more in debugging than `which`

In nine out of ten cases when Python or R was doing something unexpected, it was because I was using the wrong installation

“What is the function of Species X?” Is a question I hear often from non-biologists.

But it’s hard to answer. Species don’t exist to serve a function. They exist because they can. Everything is just trying to find a way to be.

Happy to see this out! Not only because Martin Petr's tool #slendr is incredibly useful for anyone doing evolutionary #genetic simulations, but also because it's been peer reviewed though a system that doesn't profiteer off academic work, nor impose paywalls on its readers!

And I think I'll add a new component to my research paper assignments this year: annotated biographies.

For each reference, I'll require a 3-5 sentence summary of the paper and its main findings.

It's a good habit to get into anyway. For thirty years I've been writing these summaries for the majority of the papers I've read, and I find the exercise useful both to clarify my thoughts in the moment and later when looking back at things I read years ago.

OK sounds like #EvolgenPaper is good hashtag for adding to toots and threads on Evolutionary and Population Genetics papers

We could use #EvolutionPaper for papers more generally associated with Evolutionary Biology.

Please RT this and consider using these for tooting about papers, your own of those of others. That way we'll be able to keep track of them all more.

#WildlifeJobs / #ConservationJobs in #Louisiana for a newly created BearWise position. Hire will give public presentations about living safely with bears, and undertake projects to mitigate human-bear conflict. 🐻

Great opportunity for someone with a BS in wildlife, environment science, or related field, that also has tremendous people skills.

(Since I messed up the server thing but am now on ecoevo social, a new #Introduction)

Hi, I'm Emily. I'm an Assist Prof in Biology at the University of Memphis.

My main interest is linking #phenotype to #genotype in wildlife; then explaining geographic patterns through #phylogeography, #popgen, and #demography. My focal species is the American black #bear, with secondary projects in #chipmunks, #rats, and #polarbears.

Our new paper on modelling the #spatiotemporal dynamics of a beneficial genetic variant is out @eLife.

We extend a #diffusion method for inferring the spread of a strongly selected allele, originally developed by Novembre et al. (https://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.0030339). We now incorporate #ancientDNA and allow for #advection dynamics.

Modeling the spatiotemporal spread of beneficial alleles using ancient genomes

A new method for inferring the spatiotemporal dynamics governing the spread of an advantageous mutation using ancient DNA.
