I went to see my primary care doctor due to a super violent cough that's been going on for 3 weeks now. My doctor asked me how I was doing (he knows I'm Israeli). I said "well, I lost my job, my country is in a state of war and there's a bunch of antisemitism everywhere". My doctor, a lovely, kind and soft spoken Muslim Pakistani-american gave me a hug and told me "people like you and I didn't leave our home countries and immigrated to America to be surrounded by this crap. Surround yourself with good and kind people, lay off the news and focus on whatever makes you feel good. Let the haters soak in their own frustrations. In America we are all people, no matter what our religion is". I wish there were more people like him.

👋 Hello #fediverse! I'm going into a meeting at 4ET to talk about our newsroom's social media options.

If you think our station and other #NPR stations should have a Mastodon server or a broader presence in the #fediverse, pls boost this post. If you have thoughts, please reply, I want to hear them!

I'm really struggling with reach right now so boosts are very appreciated! #handmade #glass #glasstodon #art #artistsonmastodon #artistsofmastodon

I just voted in The Webby People's Voice Awards and checked my voter registration.

It’s such an accidental godsend that the two people who developed the podcast RSS standard were completely uninterested in profits and monetization. It was one weird old hippie with fuck you amounts of tech industry money and a former music tv host burned by that industry so they made it open and free and accessible and resilient for listeners, with nothing set aside for ads and metrics and subscriptions.

19yrs later, we’re so lucky it turned out that way.

When I Bookmark something, it's just for me.

When I Like something, it's just for me and the person who made the post.

When I boost something, it's because I want to share it with others.

There's no software in the background recording and evaluating my behavior so it can decide the best ads to show me, and what I should see or not see in my feed to increase my engagement.

It's pretty nice not being the product anymore and just enjoying the web again.

#Mastodon & #TwitterMigration FTW

I’m going to tell you the story of the man who solved a crime.

Not, like, a cop who put together the clues and got his man, but a person who took a crime as old as civilization and fixed the problem where it got you in trouble.

The man: Artur Virgílio Alves Reis.

The place: 1920s Portugal.

The crime: Counterfeiting.

The problem he fixed: That the money is counterfeit.

(This is going to be a long 🧵 . Just trust me.)

@martinscott, Mel Bunce and I have a new book out! I'm experimenting with promoting this on Mastodon rather than the Blue Bird, so all boosts would be *very* much appreciated. The book is the product of 5 years of research and 150 interviews and is free to access. Humanitarian Journalists: Covering Crises from a Boundary Zone

This book documents the unique reporting practices of humanitarian journalists – an influential group of journalists defying conventional approaches to covering humanitarian crises. Based on a 5-year study, involving over 150 in-depth interviews, this book examines the political, economic and social forces that sustain and influence humanitarian journalists. The authors argue that – by amplifying marginalised voices and providing critical, in-depth explanations of neglected crises – these

I needed to read this today. My New Years revolution is to live life vibrantly, like a benevolent alien.

I think it might help. 🧡
