Geographer. In a classroom for 36 yrs. Now writing pieces on it. Intrigued by a planet; concerned for its future. Allotment-eer, tennis-er, and gardener… with the emotional upheaval they all entail. Live in East Yorkshire and appreciate hearing about lives wherever on this spinning fragment of orbiting rock you call home. #geography #geology #archaeology #astronomy #photography #climatecrisis #politics #science

Over 100 billion people have lived on our planet.

Just 622 have been to space.

Just 12 have set foot on another celestial object, our barren moon.

Not a single human has been to another planet.

We know of no other planet that can sustain human life.

Why is it so damn hard to get people to care about protecting the only home we've ever had and the only place we can live?

Historical tradition maintained today (Jan 22nd) by pruning the vine in the greenhouse. Took all of 15 mins. but created a profound sense of continuity with my medieval ancestors. (Pretty sure they were the ones outside in the cold doing the pruning rather than inside with a nice log fire quaffing the results of the previous harvest). Noteworthy: China’s population falls for the first time in 60 years. Have we seen ‘peak China’ - demographically?

So Royal family disputes are top of BBC News again. More important than the NHS or anti-democratic riots in Brazil.

Can’t help thinking that if you go to ransack a national congress building and presidential palace on a Sunday, when no-one’s there, it’s more that you’re doing it to put on your social media and get some short-lived cachet. Vandalism for likes. It’s deplorably pathetic. #brazil

For #SilentSunday, a ferry crosses Elliott Bay on its way to one of the islands.

Winters in Seattle can feel dreary at times, but I do love the subtle, muted beauty of the landscape this time of year (when I’m not soaked through from the rain, that is 😉). ❤️

Tom Hanks’ advice to his son appearing in the ‘Otto’ film who hadn’t acted before: “Turn up on time, and have an idea in your head”. (ClassicFM)

Pretty good mantra for most of us intending to have a productive new day.

@specternicnevin Wonderful. Such deep understanding and nurturing of a partner’s intrinsic well-being. Go well, the both of you.

Classic examples of a Welsh U-shaped glaciated valley don’t come much better.

…. well, granted - Nant Francon gives it a good run
