I rant a lot about gamedev-related things in-between posts about my project, you have been warned!

Today Melissa Lewis over on BlueSky pointed out that the font used in the infamous "You wouldn't steal a car" anti-piracy campaign was actually designed by Just van Rossum, whose brother, Guido, created the Python programming language (bsky.app/profile/melissa.news/post/3ln7hx5rhcj2v)

She also pointed out that the font had been cloned and released illegally for free under the name "XBAND Rough". Naturally, it would be hilarious if the anti-piracy campaign actually turned out to have used this pirated font, so I went sleuthing and quickly found a PDF from the campaign site with the font embedded (
web.archive.org/web/20051223202935/http://www.piracyisacrime.com:80/press/pdfs/150605_8PP_brochure.pdf).

So I chucked it into FontForge and yep, turns out the campaign used a pirated font the entire time!

TIL: The 2000s piracy PSA used a font designed by the fantastic Just van Rossum, whose brother Guido created the Python programming language. https://fontsinuse.com/uses/67480/piracy-it-s-a-crime-psa

How old am I?

I'm so old I remember when Google search provided more value than surveillance advertising.

I'm so old I remember when an operating system was not considered an advertising platform.

I'm so old I remember when "Artificial Intelligence" was a serious enquiry filled with brilliant people, and not a scam machine populated by sleazebags.

I'm so old I remember when "user" didn't mean "product".

I'm so old I remember when "corporation" didn't mean "person".

Trying out outlines combined with other p8scii features for #picotron 0.2.0d. The outline command ("\^o") takes a colour and a bitfield indicating which neighbours to set. This will probably also make it into #pico8 0.2.7 along with rrect()

8-9 years ago during a live round-table, I said that game devs had a social responsibility especially towards children, to not put gambling-money-related spending incentive in videogames; and it was dismissed. I was right, this kind of stuff isn't good.

Almost 19% of Japanese people in their 20s have spent so much money on gacha they struggled with covering living expenses, survey reveals  - AUTOMATON WEST

Results of a survey regarding the spending habits of young gamers in Japan have been revealed - here's how they spend their money on games.

The best thing about making videogames is that you get to play¹ a lot² of videogames³, which is so exciting ⁴

¹ test, actually
² exactly one, for several years
³ unfinished, raw, or just completely broken versions thereof
⁴ typically boring as hell and exhausting

Hey fedi, so I have this cheap doohickey for using computers away from a desk. It's got a touch pad and keys and is absolutely the right solution for the problem

But it sucks. The keys start bad and if used too much stop registering reliably, the touch pad ain't great, and it keeps losing connection to the dongle despite it being like 8 feet away

Is there some kind of premium version of these that exists? So far I've only ever seen the terrible dirt cheap ones for sale anywhere

(If you don't mind plz boost for reach I am *desperate*)

EDIT: to be clear the handheld/gamepad-like form factor is what makes this work so a more traditionally keyboard shaped device with an additional trackpad isn't really a suitable replacement

If you ever hoped that at some point Epic will clean Fab from AI generated slop, think again :|

a couple people suggested an 88x31. graphics design is my passion only, but seems doable by someone with talent

@joe yuk!

Draw the font yourself, pixelating, do not use the text function of the paint program for such small sizes.

@mirabilos unfortunately I have other things to do, so I can only hope my lazy rendition inspires someone to do it justice
@mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org
You can use the text tool in GIMP, but you have to do it in much higher resolution then scale it down with proper dithering, when done in low resolution directly it's always messy.
Oddly enough, in Photoshop you can do it even in low-res and it looks okay — but it probably just does all those manual steps for you 🤷
@m0xEE at that size even that will be too mashed
@joe This'd look really good with a pixel font! Try misc-fixed or Terminus (you may have fixed already installed, Terminus should be in packages if you use Linux).
@joe Or you could just draw the text! :3

@joe It might also look good to add a white or black outline to the outside of the Chrome logo, for additional contrast.

But "graphic design is my passion" has its own charm too, so no need to. :3

@joe truth in advertising right there
@joe

@ozzelot @joe

Microsoft Defender for endpoints has entered the chat 🙃

@project1enigma @joe I didn't know what it is, so I read the Microsoft site... I still don't know what it is and now I have an uneasy feeling in my stomach.

@ozzelot @joe

It's a "security solution" apparently. With some kind of "cloud based" dashboards etc.

And with "remote forensics" i.e. RCE as a feature.

Employee privacy is cancelled too.

@ozzelot @joe

And yes especially as highly marginalized person (Trump would hate me), and with an US company involved, and of course with closed source. Uneasy feeling in the stomach is an understatement.

@project1enigma
This is why, for better or worse, I need to leave IT and never look back. Just so much dependency on (or currently, threat from) US crap...
@joe
@project1enigma @joe Although with how IT permeates everything, it feels inescapable sometimes. Sigh.

@ozzelot @joe

This is such a mood. Even something seemingly very different like smaller scale organic farming or gardening might be IT infested nowadays. I've read even things with AI there. 🙃

And it's not only US stuff there but the general deterioration. Bloat, inefficiency, snake oil, "rational astrology", security theater etc.

@ozzelot @joe

Even where I'm working... Like an in-house non US legacy code base... And not ever getting enough slack to clean that stuff up. Sometimes makes me wanna quit and do whatever the simplest kind of work just to be as far away from this as I can.

@project1enigma
Solutions. Clouds. Forensics.

Which way are the woods again? I'd like to become one with them. Just chill with the moss.
@joe

@ozzelot @joe

I swear I hear you so much. I'm in for forests with trees and mosses. Perhaps a few nice creeks.

@project1enigma @ozzelot @joe
Imagine my disappointment when I found out that the "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool" does NOT in fact remove Windows.
@jbiserkov
We have a few tools for that. It's called (a plethora of Linux distros, GNU and not, several BSDs, etc)
@project1enigma @joe

@ozzelot @jbiserkov @joe

Only for "MDE *for Linux*" entering the chat... 🙃

@ozzelot @jbiserkov @joe

And thing... I mean I called those things "Windows fix kits" years ago...

But things like bloat and monoculture creeping in there too. (Monoculture for example browser engines...)

@joe@f.duriansoftware.com
Chrome used to have a top bar notification about it not being the default browser that often got truncated in a funny way and read like "Google Chrome is not a browser" — which is true of course, Google even admits it now 😅
@m0xEE Google chrome is built-in malware lol

@joe

need this is 88x31 gif, perhaps the ugly ball thing pops in and out of frame

@big_louse
I tried
@joe
UPD
Mastodon made it mp4, how do I attach gif?
*oma seems to not butcher GIFs, so here it is

@joe owo I love some good old built-in malware
@joe some fedi friends made these a while back, gonna put them on my website
@joe mastodon hates gifs for some reason but you get the idea
