@jaklumen @Tdorey @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm I feel we don't talk nearly enough about introversion in networks. I'm the same. My head fills up and I stop thinking. @mahabali has thought about this a bit too.

So I'm really interested in what makes a network hospitable to both introverts and extroverts by design?

@katebowles @jaklumen @Tdorey @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm
I was thinking about this.
A. What makes any space hospitable for both intro/extroverts?
B. I assume it is not a binary of course but asking ppl at both extremes to share their good/bad experiences and aspirations might be an interesting research project to pursue.
C. I think Autumm was interested in this topic awhile ago.
D. Is introversion a stable preference or contextual one? (and extroversion?)
@mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @jaklumen I love this question. I hope to come back to this with a thoughtful response soon. I'm very interested in this topic.

@Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Autumm @jaklumen These are interesting questions. I'm an introvert, fairly shy, and quite familiar with "impostor syndrome". I've learned to live with all these things, but they combine to make me avoid social gatherings with people I don't know well.

Online is different. I can jump in here in a way I would never dream of irl.

@fgraver @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Autumm @jaklumen I find it interesting that sometimes people feel more comfortable online than irl, that those who are more introverted irl might be more extroverted online. I have this tendency myself, and really grabbed onto some open online spaces like a course called #etmooc (where I met @fgraver & @Patlockley) b/c I was able to communicate so much more deeply online than I would ever do w/strangers in person. Why might that be?
@clhendricksbc @fgraver @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Autumm @jaklumen @Patlockley think it has to do w/ being devoid of other signals that we would judge. In person there are reactions, assumptions, associations. For example- I've had to look up what ppl here actually do- often have no clue, so no preconceptions. No chance to get in own way. ppl engage w/ default of trust -in good way- child-like & innocent, & fortunately has been a nurturing playground here.
@clhendricksbc @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Autumm @jaklumen @Patlockley My experience on Mastodon so far has really reminded me of #etmooc, actually.

@fgraver @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen we make the MOOC by learning? Cc @catherinecronin

Play on "we make the road by walking" book

@mahabali @Tdorey @catherinecronin @katebowles @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen I also love that comment!

The VC discussion I was part of from #oeb16 really got me thinking about the nature of learning environments and the relationships developed within them. I'm not even sure if the term MOOC is useful anymore, since so many people use it in different ways - but to me, in this context, the community is the MOOC and vice versa.

@mahabali @Tdorey @catherinecronin @katebowles @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen (And now I really must read "We make the road by walking", which I finally got a hold of yesterday)
@fgraver Me too! I think that's why I keep coming back here. It's a collection of really thoughtful, sincere, caring people that I enjoy interacting with.
@clhendricksbc @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen I have found this to be true in myself and some others and I don't have a great idea why (beyond @Patlockley's cheeky/probably correct explanation, anyway). Part of it is surely (for me) my great comfort with expressing myself intentionally and completely, in writing, when I've had sufficient processing/revision/time to do so. As an aside, I've moved from 140 chars to 500 and may yet blog (again). :)
@Dan_Blick @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen people think i am a bit ferocious online and i put that down to vernaculars i grew up in and now i suspect like txtspk and emoji we've got new ones. There is also much more.scope to be silent online and not be rude
@Patlockley @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen i am pretty scared of u online, Pat, as I feel if i say anything that is not 100% thought out i may get strongly critiqued. This is not because you are really scary, it is probably on me. And i do not think u ever did anything to me...but i feel like i don't understand most of what ur saying and why because I lack context rather than because it is ferocious. Dunno if that makes sense
I'm trying to imagine @mahabali scared of anything and it's not working. :) @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen

@Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen Having met Pat in person I can vouch that he is as far from scary as you can get (sorry for blowing your cover).

I like that online the mirrors of our selves can have all kinds of curvatures of distortion. We say identity like its a fixed quantity. A student once described for her it was an iris (as in opening) that we change its dimensions in different contexts.

@cogdog @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen I find I'm not usually surprised by meeting people offline, beyond "oh, taller than I thought you'd be", or the reverse. I like learning the sound of someone's accent, the pitch of their voice.
@katebowles @cogdog @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen after knowing someone well via skype for a year, when we met in person I was greeted with - oh, so you do have feet ;)
@lauraritchie @katebowles @cogdog @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @actualham @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen FEET? I'm still getting over that people have voices and faces...
@fgraver @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen what if there was a 'room' where you could be a talking head, ephemeral, don't know how you could or if you would want to log it, extension of the coffee house metaphor, but exploring a different medium than typing? ...just daydreaming here...

@lauraritchie @fgraver @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen I have colleagues developing this kind of VR environment. I think we're all reflecting on what constitutes MVP: minimum viable presence.

(Yes, I read that College MVP article. I think we do need to keep an eye on the deterioration of some established public roads and the privatisation of others, whatever paths we make by going off-road.)

@katebowles @lauraritchie @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen Isn't this related to what people were talking about with 2nd life? I never started an account there, but virtual environments for education have always appealed to me. VR could have potential in all kinds of edu. settings, but I also find I am wary of corporate angle, privacy angle, ethical implications, ...

@fgraver @katebowles @lauraritchie @Tdorey @mahabali @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen It's easy to make Second Life, jokes it had many probs.

When I worked at NMC we ran many virtual conferences- ppl stayed much longer between sessions. There was social "presence" you pay attention to proximity to others. Audio volume was spatial, ppl farther away are quieter.

Biggest tell- ppl were physically embarrassed when they accidentally disrobed avatar in public.

@fgraver @katebowles @lauraritchie @Tdorey @mahabali @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen I have loads of old SL stories. Client asked us not to put a virtual snake in virtual river near virtual space the rented from us, they had real fear of snakes.

I participated in HR training role play on discrimination as applicant who gets angry when after being offered job, was told I have to change my non human avatar (I was a dog, doh).

@Patlockley @cogdog @fgraver @katebowles @lauraritchie @mahabali @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen For me, the most valuable thing about virtual spaces is that I can pop in & out in alignment with real life demands- sometimes for a couple of minutes while cooking supper, sometimes for days. So I like when synchronicity is optional.
@lauraritchie @fgraver @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen google had a 3d chat room thing for a week or two. Perhaps social media needs a people who are here box?
@Patlockley @fgraver @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen I had idea while ago. Wanted to call it sofa 2 stage + would be a repository of different images & places & idea was w/ simple VR headset + 3D camera (I got ThetaS) could develop progressive experiences for ppl to talk, play, perform... & would be great in school. Company got interested & I got worried. Didn't have time to learn code. Someone should develop as open ed resource... :)
@Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen (part 2) I have loads of images & idea is that it would also have the pedagogical framework to go with it - about performance coaching/learning,. I'd love to do it.... just need the tech side. *sigh*
@katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen branching off to talk about this @Tdorey asked to hear more... if anyone wants to join in I'll tag it #sofa2stage (making a small effort to label a fork) :)
@lauraritchie @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen I'd love to hear more about this ideas. I'be got visions of folks dropping in leaving something & some else finding it (not sure that's at all what you have in mind)

@Tdorey @lauraritchie @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen This was my experience of federated wiki -- the asynchronous leaving and finding of tiny idea notes. I was really compelled by this, enough to struggle with the functions given my poor tech skills.

I think it's something to consider here. A slow-moving makerspace of ideas.

Studio.

@Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen This is really a reply to @clhendricksbc about branching paths. On a laptop, I like that every new thought in this conversation jumps right back to @actualham's original comment about stepping away and coming back.

It feels as though mastodon comes with a longer memory for a thread once you find it; but harder to find it.

@katebowles @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen That's true, Kate--it does go back there. But I also find that sometimes you get onto a thread and think you're seeing all the replies but actually there are whole other branches you're missing that you might stumble upon sometimes by accident. wouldn't it be cool if there were a way to image those somehow, graphically, & follow them out?
@clhendricksbc @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen I found that too- there was something that @katebowles said & I saw it as a reboost/share, but hadn't seen the first time round... effort required to read this choose your own adventure, but thoughts shared are so worth it.

@clhendricksbc @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen This is *exactly* the question I went over and over with federated wiki.

If I wrote something, and someone forked it, but then someone else forked it, the branching paths could never find each other again. And after a while I found myself grieving these lost connections.

Is there a way to map the garden of branching paths?

@katebowles @clhendricksbc @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen for some reason the phrase "to map the garden of branching paths" sent me right back to my days as a 13-15-y.o. when I played lots of D&D...

But I agree, some sort of map would be useful. I prefer the Mastadon structure to that of G+, for example, following conversations can be challenging.

@Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen An edit function would be useful...

That last sentence should start "*While* I prefer..."

@katebowles @clhendricksbc @Tdorey @mahabali @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen

A question is- do you want a system, with algorithms, to make maps for us, or do we do the work to make our own maps?

@cogdog @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen I'd like the chance to develop my own algorithms within a larger public platform, but I wish there were more tools to help those of us without higher-order tech skills do this kind of custom shaping.
@cogdog @katebowles @clhendricksbc @Tdorey @mahabali @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen I want to make my own maps! (catching up here...., I'm a bit behind!) but I'd like the facility to realise those maps somehow. ...does that just mean I need to do some homework & learn how to do it?
@cogdog @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @actualham @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen Love this. I do wanna harness the power of the robot (algorithms) to do crap I don't wanna do (Wile E. Coyote's breakfast machine) but I wanna be able to see *inside* the robot's guts. ALSO, I really want to make my own bad cartography and share my own maps. -- "A question is- do you want a system, with algorithms, to make maps for us, or do we do the work to make our own maps?"
@katebowles @clhendricksbc @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @jaklumen The Hendricks and i discussed a wordpress plugin to bring threading to posts - mostly as an OER revision tracker - but could do this easy enough to code
@Patlockley @katebowles @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @jaklumen Cool--I'm now a "the"! :) I guess I keep having similar thoughts over the years, as I'm hoping we can do something like that again.
@Patlockley @fgraver @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen @mdvfunes just suggested an 'I'm listening' button... might reduce the @ mentions (although it is nice to be mentioned, it's cumbersome & always has possibility of leaving some out unintentionally)
@lauraritchie @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen @mdvfunes might the logic be to not have directed conversations a la new twitter?
@Patlockley @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen @mdvfunes say more please? do you mean not tag anyone and just link via tag/room/tire swing (or whatever is created/evolves)?
@lauraritchie @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen @mdvfunes no usernames in replies, you reply to a tweet not a person. Also no limitation on who sees mentions based on who is in them
@Patlockley @Tdorey @katebowles @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen @mdvfunes i like getting notified so i like tags. It is one of things i dislike about threaded discussions actually

@mahabali I like notifications too. I would not want to lose them.

@Patlockley @Tdorey @katebowles @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @lauraritchie @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen @mdvfunes

@fgraver @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen @mdvfunes It would be good if the tags didn't eat into the characters though... nearly 140 chars just of tags in this one alone...
@katebowles @Tdorey @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen when I know someone VERY closely online, meeting for a few days i am often not surprised at all by what i find; it is different when i know the person superficially before - can get v close v fast w personal meeting. Most ppl in my circles r pretty authentic online; that won't always be the case in other contexts, though
@cogdog @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen yeah but we've got a back story and so on - in nerd terms I'd say we've a context around each other whereas with others it's a dangling pointer (a dangling pointer is a reference to a play where a memory was but that memory has since gone or never was there). Perhaps like an instanteous apparently out of character like Bonnie's context collapse
