Gardening, listening, living by the sea on Dharawal Country. Working in higher education in Australia, also in public health community governance. Life is short, let’s be good ancestors and try not to trash the earth. Here for #ClimateJustice #TransRights and this and that.

If all goes well, I’m in the process of shifting to bunk this account with @kate. I’ve been on mastodon.social since 2016 when it was a small town, and I’ve been wary of anything too Straya. But I’m quietly watching the decisions and good actions of @aussocialadmin and @AusSocialMods relative to some other talk today about moderation fails, and I’m thinking that, to use an Australian phrase, it’s time.
This is one of my favourite educational images so I’m going to share it just because. #languages #world
We know how to think about platforms. We can center race, labor, fairness, equity, commons and care, but we can't be rushed into this because some wacky Space Karen needed to ruin a public common.
There's no list of #gardening people on Mastodon.
I will create one...

Add any gardeners.

Honestly a lot of the conversations happening about mastodon and how it perpetuates and exacerbates oppression might feel stressful but they’re showing exactly what sets this space apart from corporate walled gardens: we have the *opportunity* to build out the things our communities need, the way our communities need them.

The thing is—that actually takes work, and we’ve gotta do it, and we’ve gotta recognize the folks that HAVE been doing it for a long time now, right in this space. I, for one, don’t want to see their efforts wasted.

And tbh I really think mastodon itself (the specific software, as maintained by Garg et al) ain’t it, and will likely never be it. But I’m thankful that it’s helped bootstrap these conversations and give us a glimpse of what could still be if we can manage to get it there.

I didn't see the little peekaboo frog until after I got home and was editing my shots. #Photography #naturephoto
Honestly very moved by Parker Molloy saying “take a beat” about blocking servers. So much of the intensity of this past week has been about judging the actions of strangers on the account of other strangers, and sometimes you do have to act on what you believe happened, or no one would act. But when someone directly involved has the courage and graciousness to say things were more complex, that’s a cultural shift in what’s possible.

Spent about an hour today talking with @adamdavidson, the creator one one of the mods over at journa.host.

It was a very good, very productive conversation that I'm very glad to have had. I want to clarify a few things related to the drama over there:

1. Obviously, admins of different instances can make their own calls, but I'm suggesting that people take a beat before blocking all of journa.host. I believe the people over there are coming from a good place, 1/4

I will never understand why people are so averse to diversity.

I like seeing trans people speaking to each other with idioms I don't get, cute girls speaking a language I can't recognize, or gay dudes priming and posing in random pics.

Seeing shit that is not for me makes me feel like I'm part of a much bigger world that still has space for me to learn and grow.

That's a big place of comfort for me. The bottomless nature of the human experience means we all have space to be fully who we are.

That's pretty cool.
