@jaklumen @Tdorey @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm I feel we don't talk nearly enough about introversion in networks. I'm the same. My head fills up and I stop thinking. @mahabali has thought about this a bit too.

So I'm really interested in what makes a network hospitable to both introverts and extroverts by design?

@katebowles @jaklumen @Tdorey @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm
I was thinking about this.
A. What makes any space hospitable for both intro/extroverts?
B. I assume it is not a binary of course but asking ppl at both extremes to share their good/bad experiences and aspirations might be an interesting research project to pursue.
C. I think Autumm was interested in this topic awhile ago.
D. Is introversion a stable preference or contextual one? (and extroversion?)
@mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @jaklumen I love this question. I hope to come back to this with a thoughtful response soon. I'm very interested in this topic.

@Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Autumm @jaklumen These are interesting questions. I'm an introvert, fairly shy, and quite familiar with "impostor syndrome". I've learned to live with all these things, but they combine to make me avoid social gatherings with people I don't know well.

Online is different. I can jump in here in a way I would never dream of irl.

@fgraver @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Autumm @jaklumen I find it interesting that sometimes people feel more comfortable online than irl, that those who are more introverted irl might be more extroverted online. I have this tendency myself, and really grabbed onto some open online spaces like a course called #etmooc (where I met @fgraver & @Patlockley) b/c I was able to communicate so much more deeply online than I would ever do w/strangers in person. Why might that be?
@clhendricksbc @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @Patlockley @jaklumen I have found this to be true in myself and some others and I don't have a great idea why (beyond @Patlockley's cheeky/probably correct explanation, anyway). Part of it is surely (for me) my great comfort with expressing myself intentionally and completely, in writing, when I've had sufficient processing/revision/time to do so. As an aside, I've moved from 140 chars to 500 and may yet blog (again). :)
@Dan_Blick @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen people think i am a bit ferocious online and i put that down to vernaculars i grew up in and now i suspect like txtspk and emoji we've got new ones. There is also much more.scope to be silent online and not be rude
@Patlockley @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @Dan_Blick @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @jaklumen i am pretty scared of u online, Pat, as I feel if i say anything that is not 100% thought out i may get strongly critiqued. This is not because you are really scary, it is probably on me. And i do not think u ever did anything to me...but i feel like i don't understand most of what ur saying and why because I lack context rather than because it is ferocious. Dunno if that makes sense
I'm trying to imagine @mahabali scared of anything and it's not working. :) @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen

@Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @katebowles @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen Having met Pat in person I can vouch that he is as far from scary as you can get (sorry for blowing your cover).

I like that online the mirrors of our selves can have all kinds of curvatures of distortion. We say identity like its a fixed quantity. A student once described for her it was an iris (as in opening) that we change its dimensions in different contexts.

@cogdog @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen I find I'm not usually surprised by meeting people offline, beyond "oh, taller than I thought you'd be", or the reverse. I like learning the sound of someone's accent, the pitch of their voice.
@katebowles @cogdog @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @actualham @fgraver @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen after knowing someone well via skype for a year, when we met in person I was greeted with - oh, so you do have feet ;)
@lauraritchie @katebowles @cogdog @Dan_Blick @mahabali @Tdorey @actualham @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen FEET? I'm still getting over that people have voices and faces...
@fgraver @Tdorey @katebowles @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen what if there was a 'room' where you could be a talking head, ephemeral, don't know how you could or if you would want to log it, extension of the coffee house metaphor, but exploring a different medium than typing? ...just daydreaming here...

@lauraritchie @fgraver @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen I have colleagues developing this kind of VR environment. I think we're all reflecting on what constitutes MVP: minimum viable presence.

(Yes, I read that College MVP article. I think we do need to keep an eye on the deterioration of some established public roads and the privatisation of others, whatever paths we make by going off-road.)

@katebowles @lauraritchie @Tdorey @mahabali @cogdog @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen Isn't this related to what people were talking about with 2nd life? I never started an account there, but virtual environments for education have always appealed to me. VR could have potential in all kinds of edu. settings, but I also find I am wary of corporate angle, privacy angle, ethical implications, ...

@fgraver @katebowles @lauraritchie @Tdorey @mahabali @actualham @Dan_Blick @Autumm @clhendricksbc @Patlockley @jaklumen It's easy to make Second Life, jokes it had many probs.

When I worked at NMC we ran many virtual conferences- ppl stayed much longer between sessions. There was social "presence" you pay attention to proximity to others. Audio volume was spatial, ppl farther away are quieter.

Biggest tell- ppl were physically embarrassed when they accidentally disrobed avatar in public.
