Colleges Under Austerity

I am contributing a chapter to the book "Higher Education for Good," edited by Catherine Cronin & Lara Czerniewicz. The chapter, "Austerity State University: Transforming (from) an Educational Market" pairs a focus on the experience of laboring and learning under austerity with a summary of the research about how and why austerity exists and persists as a dominating logic of our institutions. In addition, by showing the brokenness of this system, I hope to demonstrate that hope inheres within it; we can use austerity as a launchpad for envisioning what sustainability and plenty would look and feel like, not just economically, but also in other measures related to human life. I am hoping to feature stories from faculty and staff who work in colleges or university where budget hardships, cuts in programs or staffing, and a general sense of resource scarcity inflect their daily experience. If you choose to share your experiences here, your words or ideas might be used in the chapter. You have the option of being referred to by your real name or by a pseudonym, and the additional and separate option of being thanked in the citations for contributing to this piece. The survey will take as long as you wish to spend on it-- probably a minimum of 5-7 minutes, but feel free to take as long as you wish.
