He has gotten suckered and publicly humiliated by both the Iranians AND Trump (his own side) who have zero respect and total public contempt for him.
A negotiating basic: The other side must believe whatever you utter has the complete 100% support of your side/bosses, if you don't, you are USELESS to them, and an insult, as you have no power to actually deal and are "bargaining in bad faith."
I did this for a career. Vance is a global joke.

elkaki@pattykimura @AlSweigart To play devils advocate (for the sake of it really), I dont think a single negotiator on earth could have gotten anything there when your own president is admitting you are on the ropes and only have 4 weeks, or with representing an admin that changes opinions weekly, or with israel acting up.
I dont think anyone could get anything good with those conditions, a complete clownfiesta (vance is obviously responsible for that).

If I was given this assignment, I would have negotiated a package deal that included prepayment in a Swiss Bank for all future lost earning, public damage to my credibility, pain & suffering for global humiliation, because I'd never work again... Negotiations depend on trust; if there is no respect and trust, there is no way to come to agreement because your word is worthless. And a peace agreement between liars ends in war.
This isn't a stupid game or a reality show; humans will die without an agreed suspension of hostilities. Israel's calculation is that it will kill more than their own will be killed before it will agree to stop seizing other nations' land - it's Putin's gamble in invading Ukraine, it's also why he won't agree to peace talks, for now. Iran knows all of this, they sent professionals. You also NEVER agree to single items without making them dependent on all accepted demands.
Yalie JD Vance isn't even the best liar to send. But his ego is too big to accept he's the sacrificial goat, while UMiami Law School grad Marco Rubio conveniently hides out. Vance is the cannon fodder.

Iran just pants the shit out of the US, on all fronts. The satellite images I've seen of US bases, the reports of 'ghost town bases', the utter destruction in Israel that's been swept under the carpet, say it wasn't the crap negotiating team, but Iran's capabilities, that won the war.
