President Donald Trump claims the problems with the Reflecting Pool in Washington are due to vandalism. He offered no details to back that up in social media posts Friday night and Saturday, except to say there have been multiple arrests. David Hearn, a 67-year-old Bethesda, Maryland, man, said he stopped by the pool during a bike ride, touched a partially detached strip of paint in the water, and was arrested. He told The Associated Press he did not peel off paint. The president ordered the pool redone to get rid of algae that’s plagued it for more than 100 years. But the algae came back.

Trump made his announcement, after what he said was a meeting with contractors…at Camp David….It comes 16 days after the govt began refilling the pool after the renovation that Trump said would result in clean water & “could last for 100 years.”

The Park Police patrolling the Lincoln Memorial area on Friday afternoon observed an individual peeling paint from the #ReflectingPool, a spox said via email. The person was arrested on charges of destruction of government property.

WaPo later identified the person as 3X Olympian David Hearn. In an interview with WaPo, Hearn said he reached in the water after he noticed a piece of paint partially detached from the pool bottom. He said he did not damage govt property or “vandalize anything.”

#Trump claimed vandals “took some form of knife or blade, & put a 250 foot long gash into the beautiful facade.” He also claimed they poured corrosive & destructive chemicals into the #ReflectingPool. WaPo could not verify any of his allegations.

Pool experts’ explanations for the damage diverged from Trump’s. Steve Goodale, a swimming-pool expert who viewed footage of the peeled sheet of paint, said he believes the pool’s surface may have been improperly prepared for treatment.

@Nonilex Surely there are cameras in the area which would prove/disprove any such allegations. I very much doubt a 3x Olympian aged 67 disabled anything to vandalise this. Nothing was applied to prepare the surface for painting. Company either took a short cut because they have no clue: or they are happy to pocket taxpayers money corruptly as neighbours of Trump in Florida.

USA Today tells us:

"The National Parks Service says it contains 6.75 million gallons of water.

It ranges from 18 inches deep at the edges to 30 inches deep in the middle."

As as average (enough) adult male my arm is about 22 inches, pit-to-fingertip

@FranceskaMann @Nonilex @north Dems submit bills all the time to improve healthcare and other things. Most of those bills never get the chance to be voted on, especially when the GOP controls the House. And for the few that do get votes, Republicans almost always block them.

Keep in mind the ACA which would have provided huge benefits for all, but was ultimately stripped of many key provisions specifically because of GOP filibuster. The GOP ALWAYS protects the billionaires.
