137 MPs, from #UKLabour, #LiberalDemocrat, #Greens, #PlaidCymru, #SNP and #SDLP, have signed a motion calling for the #EHRC guidance on #Trans people using single sex spaces to be overruled.

If your MP is on this list, write and thank them; if yours isn't, urge them to sign.

@simon_brooke my MP Ben Obese-Jecty is a Conservative - so unlike the progressive parties, he doesn’t believe in human rights. He believes that minority groups deserve their struggle and rich people deserve to get wealthier without lifting a finger. Total waste of time writing to him. #ToryScum #TransRightsAreHumanRights
@natz_b Well, mine too. But no harm in letting them know that they're out of step with their constituents.
@simon_brooke mines Labour but may as well be a Tory for all the use he has been. Still wrote to him anyway.
@simon_brooke
My labour MP is on the list. Phew.
@simon_brooke Pleased to see my MP (Liz Jarvis, Lib Dem) has signed it, so yeah, I've just dropped her an email of thanks.

@DJDarren @simon_brooke Unsurprised to find mine hasn't - he's a cabinet minister.

All the Plaid Cymru ones have, and I consider them to be my real representatives.

@simon_brooke Relieved to see that my MP is a signatory.

His predecessor, Joanna Cherry, would not have approved.

@transponderings @simon_brooke it's a very low bar but it's nice when someone clears it

@transponderings #Cherry is such a hypocrite. She's old enough to certainly remember how important #Trans people were in securing the #GayRights in Scotland that she enjoys.

But now she's in? Pull up the drawbridge!

#ScotPol

@simon_brooke Rather surprised that my MP is on the list but since I chastise and criticise her regularly, I did take the time to send an email of thanks on this occasion.
@simon_brooke I had written to mine to ask him to sign and he did and sent a reply to say why - OK just the Lib-Dem party line - but still.

@Shonascatchard the LIB-DEM party line is #Transphobia? To deny #HumanRights to a minority?

EDIT: Ignore this, I had misread the post I was replying to!

@simon_brooke I'm not sufficiently across the LibDem line to have spotted that. From the letter the only suspicious phrase was 'concern...for women more broadly' but I wouldn't have said that was enough to cry transphobia. I may be näive.

@Shonascatchard the #EHRC guidance effectively bans #Trans people from using any toilets in any public or commercial space, which effectively means that they cannot go out anywhere, at least in urban areas, for more than a couple of hours.

That's a HUGE denial of civil freedom.

#TransRightsAreHumanRights

@simon_brooke I absolutely agree and took from the letter that the LibDems do too - hence signing the EDM.
@Shonascatchard ah, sorry, I had wholly misread your earlier post!
@simon_brooke no bothers - I thought I was being dense 🤦🏻‍♀️

@simon_brooke

Glad but not entirely surprised to see my MP, Clive Lewis has signed in favour of this motion.

I said the day the #EHRC announced these guidelines they were unworkable and essentially trying to create a ‘separate but equal’ approach to #trans facilities that is absolutely akin to Jim Crow.

@simon_brooke Reply from Chris Kane MP:

"I appreciate that many people, and trans people in particular, are feeling anxious about recent developments. I take those concerns seriously.

"This debate has become increasingly polarised. Too often, it is presented as having clear winners and losers. I do not accept that. These are complex issues, and framing them in that way does not help people live together or find workable solutions."

(1/2)

@simon_brooke "However, the legal position is now settled. The Supreme Court has clarified how the law should be interpreted, and that ruling must be implemented. The role of the EHRC guidance is to provide clear, practical direction on how that legal position is applied by organisations. In that context, I believe the guidance provides a lawful and workable framework."

😐

@GlasWolf Well, thanks for putting it to him; and respect to him, also, to him for replying promptly, although, obviously, I disagree with him.

@GlasWolf @simon_brooke
and if the EHRC rules cis men cannot access public toilets or the toilets at his place of work, Chris Kane will think that a lawful workable framework too

or will his mind change when it directly affects him?

of course cis men actually assault women and girls at the proportion cis people act like trans people do, so

@GlasWolf @simon_brooke
you know what was polarized?

a woman's right to vote

civil rights

all these freedoms we take for granted

politics is polarizing when there's a civil right and a civil wrong, and a whole lot of people have their ass in the group that needs to be shown humanity
