Israeli tech firm accused of targeting First Minister John Swinney

Accounts linked to tech firm BlackCore are alleged to have carried out 'digital interference operations' against John Swinney.

@randahl It was also heavily involved in electing far right Slovene government a few months ago.
@mihamarkic interesting. Source?
The Mossad/Not Mossad Threat Model Of Slovenian Election Interference | SLEEPING WITH PENGOVSKY

Honey-trap story dominanting election campaign in Slovenia last week got a twist today, with claims that it was Mossad-adjacent spooks who pulled it off.

@randahl It is perhaps also relevant that masked counter demonstrators in #glasgow yesterday were reported by the #bbc to have waved #israeli flags.

@randahl

This should have consequences…

@randahl i think this is likely to be the tip of a very large iceberg.

my personal touchstone is to be suspicious whenever an organisation suddenly turns up in the news conflating criticism of israel with antisemitism.

of course you can never be sure (and, obviously, genuine antisemitism is always with us).

@randahl

and what are the national security agencies doing about it?

maybe they're complicit too? could this happen without the nod from mi5 and gchq ?

@randahl being accused is something different than being guilty...
@Em @randahl True. But there is also such a thing as a Bayesian prior...
@randahl
*Only* in France & Scotland, of course. 😉

@Quantillion yes. Just like when we tested the first person positive for COVID-19, we had a simple one person disease problem on our hands.

Repeating my post-comment on the original Reuters article (a fine piece of reporting): Informative, outrageous; & the Israeli govt apparently knew nothing about it: “Before scrubbing its online presence following enquiries from Reuters, BlackCore described itself as "an elite influence, cyber, and technology company built for the modern era of information warfare." It said it provided governments and political campaigns with "cutting-edge strategies, advanced tools, and robust security to shape narratives."
“It has not responded to repeated requests for comment.

@randahl if it only takes 256 accounts to smear someone, it might be possible that people outside of the political sphere concerned, and not part of the voter base in the area could do this sporadically either way. This is likely being done through legitimate accounts also. It basically flies both ways.

Is it only considered as 'interference' where a specific company does it deliberately with fake accounts attributable to no one? What if it was done by encouragement and was directed?

@randahl I won’t ask if the investigation has done any work in the US in states that were critical in 2024.
@randahl israel has the right to defend itself by interfering in foreign elections \s
