Meta Deletes Face-Recognition System From Its Smart Glasses App After WIRED Report

The code WIRED identified is gone from the latest version of Meta AI, the companion app for the company’s smart glasses. Meta won’t say why or whether it’s coming back.

WIRED
@evacide let us hope they really deleted this feature instead of "deleting" the feature as they "delete" data from Facebook.
@skyglobe @evacide @Em0nM4stodon One must assume the feature has been reclassified as a national security capability exclusively available as an intelligence enhancement for government security contractors.
@evacide Or they realized they needed to be sneakier 😬
@evacide ... until they try again in a few news cycles 🙄
@floe It is important to celebrate your victories as an activist, even if no win is permanent or total, because otherwise you will burn out to a cinder. I find people who piss on every achievement because it is not perfect or complete incredibly tedious and unhelpful.
@evacide Well, agreed. I admit I've turned into a bit of a cynic over the years, but I certainly didn't want to piss on the achievement here, just express my exasperation that "no win is ever permanent" and the fight will always have to continue.
@floe @evacide You celebrate victories today in order to fight again tomorrow. It's small but necessary as it shows even a self-appointed god can bleed and that it can be felled even if you'll fight the same thing again.
@evacide hopefully the MA House of Representatives can get those protections through and other states follow.
@evacide hiding the app icon is not the same as deleting the "system".
@evacide sadly, it's probably just going server side. Those glasses as a whole should be shamed out of existence.
@evacide
It makes you wonder what other crap software apps have sneakware embedded
@evacide For how long, though. These annoying features often have a comeback
@lf_araujo @evacide
Every single gain in social justice is constantly under threat of getting clawed back, which is why we must be constantly keeping them in check. Our efforts must be greater than theirs. Constantly.
It’s a battle we must endure and participate in until the end of capitalism, patriarchy, & white supremacy. (And even then, stay vigilant & know the danger)
@evacide We need to keep calling them out on their BS.
@evacide it doesn't work every time: Zuckerberg's haircut, as an example.
@evacide That's nice of them to say. How will they prove that it is never operable now and into the future, when the execs are all retired or in their graves, and the young bucks want to make their mark by selling data to the corrupt?
More accurately: they were caught this time, but they're absolutely planning how to try it again without being noticed
@evacide it‘s FB. Shame does not work.
@evacide to be honest, I don’t believe Meta.
@evacide now they should detect if the video recording LED has not been tampered with. And if it has, disable the camera. Or make the glasses explode.
@evacide
Now let's make sure it stays away and they don't dare to introduce face-recognition again.

@evacide I keep thinking of these as Segways. Without the highly problematic facial rec, they will still have some applications but not universal appeal.

Imagine doing a tour of a foreign city with these on. Pretty useful but not the same product for Meta as everyday carry.

@PizzaDemon @evacide
Even that purpose is not as good as just enjoying the place, getting a little lost in a city, hiring a guide, doing some research and learning about the places & what you want to see before you go, and taking your own photographs and videos with a curated mind.
@evacide until they enable it again or do it on the images and videos they get in "their cloud".
@evacide I’m cynical. I suspect a flag that will turn it back on sometime in the future
@evacide

So, the glasses
users won't benefit from the feature, but Meta will still be sifting all the image-data on the backend for their own gains.

@evacide something gotta be wrong with you to wear those things if you even know a tenth of what's out there about meta.

it's like that old story where the frog helps the snake cross the stream and then gets bit by it and the frog is 'why' and the snake is 'bitch you knew i was a snake'

@evacide nah, the Glassholes are still acting as "Unofficial Enployees" of NSAbook andbneed to be yeeted!
@evacide
I wouldn't trust Jeff Bezos to be honest about that for a microsecond. He's probably just lying.

@evacide

So now only criminals will have facial recognition in Meta Products, and Corporations, and Police, and ICE, and

@evacide I'm still gonna treat every Glasshole like a Stasi-like UC Snitch!

#Glassholes #Glasshole #SpyGlasses

@evacide As if they'll come back and make it a "commercial only" or paid feature. It's still Meta...
@evacide They'll add it back later when everyone is distracted.
@KitsuneVixi For example, wenn they open the Epstein files …
