Does anyone here know how the process works in #france to get assessed/diagnosed for neurodivergence (ADHD, autism, etc.) as an adult? Public system vs private? Waiting times? Costs?

Any experiences or advice would be highly appreciated.

@autistics

@acallegaro i found a neuropsychologyst who diagnosed my adhd, with a 6 month delay (non covered, approx 500e with 1/3 refounded by my insurance), and then adressed me to a psychiatrist (covered, hard to find one), for medication.
Appointments in chu for adhd are nearly impossible to find (years long waiting list). For autism you can either find a neuropsychologist, or a psychiatrist willing to fill a file for the CRA (not the detention center!).
There might be other ways i don't know about.

@Yaiaou honestly the whole process sounds incredibly inaccessible.

thanks a lot for the detailed explanation though, this is genuinely very helpful

@acallegaro depends on the place you are and the budget available.

@adelinej @acallegaro en français j'utilise @autisme (sur lemmy)

@acallegaro The "free" public option is to go through a CRA (Centre de Ressources sur l'Autisme). You call them and get in a queue to get a joint assessment by a psychiatrist and psychologist. They prioritize kids though, so for adults it can take several years (in my case 3.5) to get a simple 1h first appointment. You are advised to see a private psychologist earlier on your own to get a WAIS IV test and other early assessments. Needless to say, the whole thing is excruciatingly slow, and it is very frustrating to get a +/- diagnosis based on the basis of a single 1h appointment with no follow-up appointment.

The alternative is to go to the private sectors, psychiastrists and psychologists. It's expensive, and they too have long waiting lists. If you are lucky you may find a clinical psychologist working in research at a university, who can help to offer a diagnostic while you become part of a research cohort. I was given the number of a university colleague for that, but she unfortunately was on maternity leave when I tried to contact her and couldn't take me.

It's all a big a mess and certainly not at scale in terms of medical environment, for something that affects more than 1/100 of the population..

@jaztrophysicist @acallegaro
True
France is far behind many developped countries concerning ASD diagnosis and healthcare.
Same for ADHD.
@acallegaro @autistics Depends a lot.
I found a psychiatrist specialized in adhd.
Reimbursed at least partially (maybe i pay around 5€/appointement)
The diagnosis took 4-5 appointments and 3 months.
@acallegaro @autistics But before that I spent 6 months with a bad psychiatrist (i was sent there by my GP)
