The Union Pacific No.4014 "Big Boy," a 4-8-8-4 steam engine, rolling along the southern edge of the Black Rock playa in Nevada this morning. The 4014 was built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady, New York, in 1941.

Union Pacific No.4014 "Big Boy," a 4-8-8-4 steam engine, rolling along the southern edge of the Black Rock playa in Nevada yesterday morning. I'm off to try and catch the 4014 crossing the Clio trestle tomorrow morning. There's a forecast for rain and the humidity will be high. High humidity makes for nice steamy steam engines!

The Union Pacific No.4014 "Big Boy," a 4-8-8-4 steam engine built in 1941, rolling over the Clio Trestle on the historic Feather River Route in Northern California this morning.

I was hoping for some steam action because it was cool and humid, as compared to two years ago when the 4014 last traveled this route, but I didn't expect this!

It was a challenging day chasing the UP No.4014. It was very slow coming up the hill in the Feather River Canyon. By the time it got in the area where I was, it was late in the day and the light was fading fast. With the rain, and snow further up the hill, the 4014 was really blowing steam!

The No. 4014 entering the Williams Loop, a rail spiral on the Union Pacific Railroad's Feather River Route. It was really chugging heading up the hill to the Sierra Valley & summit at Beckwourth Pass. I was standing on the upper part of the loop as the train crossed under me. Very impressive the steam / smoke / power of that engine under full load. It's water capacity is 95,000L (25k gal) & it consumes 760L per mile!

Here's a shot of the 4014 before it passed under me to enter the Williams Loop in the Feather River Canyon of Northern California. It was really boiling steam and smoke chugging up hill in the Sierra.

I failed to get up and go train chasing this morning. 🫀 But here's a last shot I made of it on Sunday. It was nearly dark. Also, this was the closest I ever got to the 4014 when it was in motion. That's one big chunk of iron to have blowing by you ~20ft away!

@elaterite Thanks for the awesome shots!

❓from that distance, did you feel the warmth of the engine as it went by?

@hwine No, I didn't notice the heat. I've been near many other trains at close range, but with the 4014 I was mostly aware of it size and mass as it passed by. It had a presence that I haven't noticed with other heritage or modern trains.
@elaterite Its a gorgeous shot Bob 🀩
@elaterite Another great shot. I hope I get to see this when it visits Buffalo later this year.
@bosak Thank you! I would encourage you to make an effort to see it. It is one massive machine!

@elaterite

They're fun but the UP's 4-8-8-4s were an anachronism the day they went in service. An A-B-B-A set of EMD FTs had it beat on every count.

The FT started it all for the builder, bolstering its position as the leader in the diesel locomotive market.

@VE2UWY Performance is one thing, but steam is more exciting.

@elaterite

Don't get me wrong - when I lived in Chicagoland and UP brought 3985 (4-6-6-4 Challenger) to town, I was trackside. Likewise when MILW 261 ran on the BNSF … twice, I was there. Oh, and I've ridden behind steam at Strasburg, Durango, and Bellows Falls.

But they are still inefficient, high-maintenance, labor-intensive anachronisms. :-)

@VE2UWY Absolutely true! 200 gallons of water and >30 gallons of fuel oil per mile. Pretty gross when you consider they've been driving that thing all over the country for the last six years or so. I wonder what they budget for its operations? I'm only a mild railfan. My favorite place is the Nevada Northern Railway in Ely. I don't ride the trains but I love that they let people freely wander around the railyard, fully operational machine shop, and engine houses.

@elaterite

Edaville! I knew I'd been behind steam somewhere else. I think Edaville is gone though? With all the equipment move (back) to Maine?

β€œQuick, Robin! To the rabbit hole!”

@elaterite I've a question, it's okay if you don't know the answer, it's just directed at you because your super photos have made me curious ;)

Are these trains used as everyday freight trains, or are they for photo opportunities and tourism?

@Kitty In the case of the UP 4014 (my recent photos), it's a Union Pacific goodwill / marketing campaign. In the case of other steam engines I photograph they are all heritage tourist attractions. However, one that I've not posted about in a long time, and that I'll be living near once I move, is the Durango-Silverton railway. While it is mostly a tourist train it also carries hikers and backpackers to remote trailheads in Colorado's San Juan Mountains.
@elaterite That's cool and interesting. Thank you for the info :)

@elaterite That is a fantastic shot, Bob. Well done!

I've seen a few large steam locomotives in action here in the Pacific Northwest (including 3985 before it was retired), but I haven't had a chance to see 4014 yet. It was supposed to here a few years ago, but the tour was canceled due to the pandemic.

@elaterite these have all been fantastic but this one might be my favorite.
@elaterite this is Trump's America. Back to steam trains now you've choked all the oil off!
@elaterite Fantastic shots! What a treat to see a steam engine in action.

Those are always great pictures you take of the old steam locomotives. Do some of them still run "normally" with freight and passengers in the USA, or are they museum trains run by clubs and friends?
@Ruanjoma They are all heritage lines. The UP one in the photos is for marketing. Most are operated by museums. However, the Durango & Silverton Railroad Company in Colorado, while operating heritage equipment, they run a regular schedule taking tourists between the two towns & hikers & backpackers to trailheads along the route. Oh, & the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in Nevada runs a regular schedule as well. So there are probably others, but they are mainly heritage lines for tourists.

@elaterite That's over 200,000lb. of water!

Going up those mountains consumes a lot. I think that's why you find the man-made lakes like the SP Lakes in the Sierra Nevada, named after/by Southern Pacific.

@elaterite look at all that steam!
@GoldenKoi Ya, it was a, "Wow!" moment for sure as it passed under me. I really should have shot a video. The smoke and steam were boiling like an angry volcano!
@elaterite amazing! Are the two sets of driving wheels synchronised, or do they work slightly independently? One set of controls?
@FourT4 Hm, I don't know, but I can envision the engineer's ability to control each of the four drivers independently, maybe?
@elaterite
Really impressive engine πŸš‚πŸ‘.
Still in duty, or was this a historic ride?
@frankobert It is impressive. It was refurbished a few years ago. They tour the country with it for historic / marketing reasons.
@elaterite Good shot! I bet that was a satisfying conclusion to the challenge. Some friends caught it further west. That's a huuuuuuuge steam loco!
@elaterite fantastic shots! Love seeing them.
@elaterite does the yellow car carry additional water?
@guardeddon I don't know, but it does look like that.
