I'm off to try and catch the 4014 crossing the Clio trestle tomorrow morning. There's a forecast for rain and the humidity will be high. High humidity makes for nice steamy steam engines!

The Union Pacific No.4014 "Big Boy," a 4-8-8-4 steam engine built in 1941, rolling over the Clio Trestle on the historic Feather River Route in Northern California this morning.

I was hoping for some steam action because it was cool and humid, as compared to two years ago when the 4014 last traveled this route, but I didn't expect this!

@elaterite I am very envious. I could not get away to chase this locomotive
@Scott Bummer. Tomorrow will be interesting, if it makes its scheduled run over the Sierra from Roseville to Sparks. A major winter storm is happening. At Donner summit there's 10-14 inches of snow forecasted for tonight and 14-20 inches forecasted for tomorrow! I-80 might be closed with that much snow. Much less in Truckee, however. Whatever the case the Big Boy plowing through that much snow will be spectacular!
@elaterite it's not making steam, it's making its own cloud system. Stunning shot!
@shom Indeed! Thank you!
@elaterite Hope the later tour heading to the east coast passes somewhere close to me
@elaterite is this the 19th century?
@Wim Could be the early 20th century!
@elaterite is it touring again?

@elaterite fun! we just missed it in Truckee a few years back.
@luis_in_brief Ya, that was '24. They hit a tree and had to fix something on the way up the hill. They were running very late. Maybe they didn't bother to stop in Truckee? You should try and get out and see it if you're in the area!
@elaterite maybe, but we had been road tripping ourselves and so the family veto'd my interest on grounds of "we are all tired and would rather go home than look at an old train". Which, fair.

@elaterite I wish I had the time this weekend to go to Roseville to see it in person. I've never managed to see one in person and it would be great to see the operating example up close.

Hopefully these trips become an annual thing.

My father-in-law worked at GE Switchgear in Schenectady for many years. That was for power plants, not locomotives, bu I believe GE built their diesel locomotives there as well.

Fun fact: diesel engines power electric generators, and the actual drive is from electric motors. This is because electric motors can deliver full torque at 0 rpm, which is helpful when you’re starting a million or so pounds of freight moving from a standstill.
