"Disable your ad blocker to read this article."

Nah. <Closes Tab>

@elfin

I don't run a ad blocker, & I often get accused of running such a thing. I do run some DuckDuckGo security thingy.

@doctorwhom I run μBLock Origin AND Privacy Badger from the EFF ... I don't put up with the Web's bullshit.

@elfin

I've got Privacy Badger going too. It blocked 4 sites from:

@elfin @doctorwhom consentomatic for extra points
@elfin @doctorwhom yeah, my fav thing about ublock is that it's really good not just in ad-blocking but anti-anti-adblocking
@elfin I get this in Google feed all the time and I'm just like. haha how about "don't show articles from this source again" button bitch
@elfin Nothing is worth it, nothing ever will be.
@elfin and when you disable the the Adblocker, you get the Paywallscreen.
@elfin It is the only way.
@elfin
*then spends one hour trying to circumvent paywall*
@elfin @Monsieur_Lepetit reader view works, or on Firefox I use an extension that disabled JavaScript on a site. And it remembers by site, so I usually only have to turn it off once. Doesn't always work, but works enough of the time to be worth it for me at least.
@scottcarlson @Monsieur_Lepetit I love Reader View ... doesn't always work (looking at you 404Media).
@elfin clicks on Internet archive addon.

@elfin

"Honey, It ain't the ads I'm blocking...."

@elfin My browser saw that message and quietly filed it under “no” while loading the article anyway.
@elfin That's the spirit!
@elfin
I wouldn't mind the ads if they weren't a threat vector
@elfin Can't be that important a read if they're willing to deny you access to their article over a few cents of add revenue.
@elfin /me opens article in reader view, which works about 90% of the time
@elfin my machine my rules. Salesmen are not smart enough to write anything onteresting
@elfin F12 -> Delete Node -> F12

@elfin
"Please sign up to read this article"

No 😭

@elfin best thing is, I get these even on systems with no adblocker… they’re a scam.
@elfin My same reaction, usually.

@elfin
Or

"Sign up with your email for a free account to read this article."

Fuck no! <Copy URL, open webpage archive>

@elfin

Also, the first 3 paragraphs are free but gently fading-out, and written so completely vague and formless to make you sign-up to read the rest to see if they actually even have a story to tell to go with the outrage-blaster headline.

@elfin disabling javascript will usually fix that
@elfin
Journalists must get paid somehow, though.
@elfin I don't even have an adblocker and get these messages, so...
I don't care anymore
@elfin it's called reading mode for a reason. Either it gets rid of all the obstacles or I'm not reading it.
