It’s painful to see every premium, service, and subscription in my life increase on a yearly basis, but even the thought of raising prices of our own apps and subscriptions make me feel like a criminal (not to mention super risky for a tiny company to do). So here I am feeling like the value of my dollar just continues to decrease.

(Just a thought as I get an email from YouTube premium saying my sub price is increasing next month.)

@mark single data point here, but I happily pay more for other apps so wouldn’t even flinch if you did boost prices

@daveshea @mark same same.

Now I have this idea that prices everywhere say “market price” like at good restaurants.

@daveshea yea I know many would! But a lot of others would also move onto something else. It’s such a scary/risky thing to adjust when the effects can make such a big impact in our lives.
@mark maybe worth considering a higher price tier to ease some of the pressure? Either through feature differentiation or even just an option to pay the true cost of development for those willing to kick in a bit more.
@mark I often think I should raise my prices by $1-2 for each tier, but I’ve convinced myself that every single one of my users will leave if I do.
@caseyliss @mark I like when apps have the option to pay more - like Callsheet; (Yearly Max and Ultra). I think those super-supporters would be more willing to absorb an increase than the average price-sensitive user, but I have zero idea what the split is like.
@WTL @caseyliss @mark I would also gladly update my yearly subscription to a higher priced tier. Y’all’s app is fantastic.
@caseyliss Funny. I like Callsheet when I do use it, but I probably don’t use it enough to justify the price. However, I do thoroughly enjoy @atpfm and paying for Callsheet (and Overcast) is my way of adding a little bonus to my ATP membership. Now I think I should probably go pay for Hyperspace too.
@caseyliss I forgot to add that I wouldn’t blink at a small price increase either. Because, even though I’m not a frequent user, I appreciate the value when I do open the app. Same goes for @overcastfm which I do use every single day. (Also, sorry for driving a white SUV. But it gets me where I want to go, away from humanity)

@caseylissI’ll pay a couple of extra bucks for Callsheet. Go for it.

Consider this your market research 😆

@caseyliss @mark N of one but I’ve Callsheet and Ivory and I’d live with a price rise.
@mark I don't hate prices going up in a general sense (the world is definitely more expensive in every way now than it was 2 years ago). It's when people justify a price increase with a "new feature" I don't use or care about that irks me. Ring and 1Password fall into those categories.

@mark I would gladly pay more for polished indie apps that I enjoy using every day.

I'm not a 1Password user, but I would not pay them a cent. They raised $620 million and had a post about $400M ARR.

@mark I’ve gotten at least three emails from Linea Sketch users in the past few weeks asking why their old previous purchase couldn’t be restored. All of these users bought the app when it first was released back in 2017 for $7. We switched to a subscription in 2021 because we couldn’t afford to give free app updates for life.

I’ll let you guess how these conversations went. I feel ya.

@gedeonm @mark contrary, Linea is single app my daughter uses on iPad. Hence I pay monthly subscription, because it’s more expensive than yearly plan, just to express my gratitude for your work.
@acejacek @mark Can’t say thank you enough for your kindness and support. Without users like yourself we woulda been gone long long ago. Thank you. 🖖

@mark We subscribers vote with our wallets. That’s why Netflix is $30 a month, which is ridiculous, even for its highest tier. Companies will stop when they loose subscribers.

As for small companies like Tapbots, for me, there is a big difference in knowing that it’s made by three people who have families, animals, and dreams vs a CEO who makes questionable decisions about media and makes. few million a year.

@mark The dollars you earn do decrease in value.
