i'll have to do it again in a year

also now i have two options:

  • have them spend 6 months "considering" my residency application
  • pay 3000 GBP and get the decision in a day
  • 🦋 is this a gacha
oh, it looks like i won't have to do it again in a year for citizenship; gov.uk just has some really confusing prose

hold on, i've calculated it wrong

i'll have to pay 4226 GBP

if you're wondering how pay-to-win it is, here you go
i think i might have to provide results of an English language test?..
@whitequark Unless you're from the one of the exempt countries or have a degree that was taught or researched in English, yes.
Prove your knowledge of English for citizenship and settling

How you can show you know English when you apply for citizenship and to settle in the UK, and when you do not have to.

@ilmari gah. I thought GLT wouldn't need it
@whitequark I just looked up the service for checking if a degree from an overseas institution qualifies, and that costs £210, way more than doing the actual l language test (~£120 last I checked)! 🙀

    @ilmari yeah I also don't have a degree
@whitequark after living here for 5-10 years, who would have guessed that u actually know English?!!

@whitequark Might just go to #Australia and pay AU$ 11,5M to get a passport instantly…

@whitequark yeah - it should be valid for future citizenship applications without having to take it again (and pay for it again).

@whitequark is this also part of the life test?

    Congrats!

@whitequark usually the "we only want you if you are rich" is slightly more hidden i had thought
@4censord @whitequark Oh no, it absolutely was not at all hidden when I went through all this 15 years ago.
@whitequark congrats. Is it not a one time thing? How come you have to do it again?
@whitequark there's no real way the queue is 6 months long, geez, this is basically predatory

@ignaloidas @whitequark My experience (across two people/multiple visas) is that it takes about a month even if the stated processing time is 3-4 months. I don't know if it varies by nationality.

IIRC one of them has an issue date about a week after the application, and then I guess it sat in a box for a few more weeks before they sent it back? (Not sure if they can preemptively print the visa while the wait for the rest of the bureaucracy to process.)

@snowfox @ignaloidas are we talking about visas or ILR applications? because these are very different processes
@whitequark @ignaloidas They didn't seem that different for me, but it wouldn't surprise me if that also differed by visa category.
@whitequark is that a newish rule?!
Because I remember having to do it only once (in 2018 for permanent residency but not in 2019 for citizenship).
@tyrthecat as far as i'm reading gov.uk texts it is the rule
@whitequark that sucks! Really sorry to hear.

@whitequark ~~wonder if they changed the rules.. when akko applied for passport, akko used previous life in the uk test (something-something one need to pass it only once during "the naturalisation pipeline")~~ nvm, seen your reply

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/immigration/getting-british-citizenship/applying-for-british-citizenship/ says you only need to do the test once
