Back in my day PC chassis were more than just cases, they were furniture!

@catsalad

🀣

....also the internet was in black and white and only available six hours a day.

@FediThing @catsalad internet operators had to manually route your packets

@kodymo @catsalad

You had to speak to the operator and ask them to connect you to YAHoo 123.123.123.123

@FediThing @catsalad And only 3 websites

@spanghero @FediThing @catsalad

I do remember when there was a print Internet yellow Pages that listed ALL the websites. DAMN I wish i had kept mine.

@the5thColumnist @spanghero @catsalad

Wait a minute... there were, weren't there? Magazines used to print very long lists of website addresses like a phone directory.

@FediThing @catsalad Wait, you could go on the Internet for six hours? We were limited to half an hour so as not to run up the phone bill.
@catsalad The phrase 'over egging the pudding' springs to mind. Luv it!
@catsalad This is certainly a Chassis of Glory!
@catsalad Cats loved them, and hand cranking a long dvd was great exercise, sigh....
@catsalad Ah, I remember the endless arguments with my younger brother about whose turn it was to turn the crank, and whose - to play Duke Nukem. If you tell that to the kids these days, they don't believe you!
@catsalad ah yes, the classic hardwood Philco PC case from the 1950’s. Such a thing to behold.
@catsalad It's amazing anyone who overclocked those things survived. Back when CPUs were pressure vessels.

@catsalad

Love! (in a covetous sort of way)

But coveting only because my steampunk play will be produced in Portland in July and that would look lovely as a set piece.

@catsalad How do you clean furniture polish from an intake fan. Asking for a friend...
@catsalad a Raspberry Pi cluster in one of these would pair well with that…
@covercash @catsalad what are you doing with my sewing box?
@catsalad I unironically, honestly, want to build something like this now. That's incredible!
@catsalad When I am wealthy, no one will know…but there will be signs.

@catsalad In that theme, oh man a decade and change ago I wanted a Datamancer keyboard so badly. I'm glad the company seems to still be out there and making stuff this long after his death. (https://datamancer.com/)

I do wonder if we have to pile our new PC on top of the wood PC when it dies based on generational habits with console. TVs...

@davidseidl @catsalad I couldn't justify the cost of one of the keyboards, but I did pick up a set of the keycaps for a project a while back.

@woe2you very cool! My hands are crunchy enough I use ergonomic keyboards, so even the key caps remain a dream. I'm jealous!

@davidseidl On a similar note I always used to like Jeffrey Stephenson's PC mods. Archive link cos his site doesn't seem to be up any more.

@woe2you I remember those! That's a really cool blast from the past.
@catsalad even earlier, PC cases came in three different colours: beige, brown and cigarette smoke.
@catsalad i do lowkey miss when phonographs and radios would be disguised as tables and other furniture. it meant even if the radio part broke or you no longer had any use for it you still had a table :P
@catsalad that case is awesome 😌
@catsalad It's seen your browsing history.
@catsalad Is that the cupholder?

@catsalad Really?! Exhaust pipes? Does it run on Diesel? πŸ˜‚

Anyway, VERY stylish.

@catsalad Add some bits of gold and it is a Trump Computer.
@catsalad Looks like the case a PC would have if it was in The City of Lost Children (1995). 🧐

@catsalad How long ago was this.. This should become the new normal 😭 fr
@catsalad Nice! And the cupholder matches, too!
@catsalad … and powered by charcoal.

@catsalad

Oh wow. I'd love to see a side shot of that! Someone spent some serious time putting that together!

@catsalad

I guess #Captain #Nemo hat this kinda Stuff on Board !! πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

@catsalad The first days of Windows PCs... oh memories 😍
@catsalad TBH: I don't miss the steam-driven harddisks.
Every paper on your desk would turn from dry to moist to soggy in half an afternoon.
@catsalad steam wasnt an application back then it had its own tank and you had to make sure it didn't get too pressurized
