Have you ever gone west on the northbound 101?
I lived in the valley for a while and I found the ~50 miles of mostly east/west confusing.
Now I remember why I thought it confusing.
It was the signs fault.
This is coldwater canyon & the 101 on ramp.
@MLE_online I live in #Oakland, California, west^h^h^h^h east of East Oakland.
(East Oakland was named as the city was expanding and subsuming other towns. Now Oakland extends west to the county line, near where I live. East Oakland remains a well-known neighborhood.)
@MLE_online yeah, it's confusing. East Oakland is west of much of Oakland. It's another confusing place name / cardinal mismatch.

@[email protected], i think you explained it wrong the first time, and i was confused. You said, "I live in #Oakland, California, west of East Oakland."
But what you're trying to say is that East Oakland is west of Oakland?
@MLE_online both. It's in the middle of modern Oakland. It's east of the original town site of Oakland, which was on the western shore of the San Francisco Bay, founded by squatters circa 1852. East Oakland is a neighborhood that was originally on the eastern edge of that town.
Here's an image I found that shows the neighborhoods. That teal block /used to be/ east of town.
@MLE_online It really cooked my childhood noodle that there was once an Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt, and Upper Egypt was below Lower Egypt on the map
@MLE_online My personal favorite.
For the record, the freeway runs North/South where the photo was taken.
@MLE_online picture St. Paul Minnesota. Immediately to the south of St. Paul is the city of West St. Paul. To the east of West St. Paul, is the city of South St. Paul.
Neither of those cities are part of St. Paul itself so if you want to refer to something in the west portion of the city of saint paul, you will probably confuse someone if you say its in west st paul
Same with South St. Paul. That’s bitten me in the ass more than once.
