I just learned that North Yemen was southwest of South Yemen. I always assumed that North Yemen was the one to the north.
Locally, we have Covina and West Covina. West Covina is mostly south of Covina.

@MLE_online

Have you ever gone west on the northbound 101?

@alienghic no, i've gone north on the northbound 101. when you're on the freeway, the direction you go is based on the freeway, not the cardinal directions of earth

@MLE_online

I lived in the valley for a while and I found the ~50 miles of mostly east/west confusing.

@alienghic the thing is, i would never say "go west on the 101." I would say, "take the 101 north and get off at Reseda" or something like that.

@MLE_online

Now I remember why I thought it confusing.

It was the signs fault.

This is coldwater canyon & the 101 on ramp.

@alienghic @MLE_online Heading East on the North 101 right now!!
@MLE_online North St Paul is NE of the city that is East of St Paul, and West St Paul is due South of downtown St Paul, and South St Paul is due east of West St Paul.

@MLE_online I live in #Oakland, California, west^h^h^h^h east of East Oakland.

(East Oakland was named as the city was expanding and subsuming other towns. Now Oakland extends west to the county line, near where I live. East Oakland remains a well-known neighborhood.)

@morgan I'm not following here. You're saying that East Oakland is east of Oakland?

@MLE_online yeah, it's confusing. East Oakland is west of much of Oakland. It's another confusing place name / cardinal mismatch.

East Oakland, Oakland, California - Wikipedia

@[email protected], i think you explained it wrong the first time, and i was confused. You said, "I live in #Oakland, California, west of East Oakland."

But what you're trying to say is that East Oakland is west of Oakland?

@MLE_online both. It's in the middle of modern Oakland. It's east of the original town site of Oakland, which was on the western shore of the San Francisco Bay, founded by squatters circa 1852. East Oakland is a neighborhood that was originally on the eastern edge of that town.

Here's an image I found that shows the neighborhoods. That teal block /used to be/ east of town.

@MLE_online I live east of East Oakland, but I don't live in East Oakland. It's confusing. Its name no longer matches its geographical orientation. (I live in the Oakland hills, near the border with the next county east of us.)
@MLE_online My entire knowledge of that place comes from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
@retrosponge I've spent a lot of time in West Covina but I've never seen that show
@MLE_online It doesn't remotely portray the town in a bad way. Though I do recall jokes about how far away from the beach it is.
@retrosponge @MLE_online It’s only two hours from the beach (four with traffic)!
@bytex64 @retrosponge It's not two hours from the beach. It's like an hour, maybe two with traffic
@retrosponge @MLE_online Yeah, but that was the joke in the show. :)
@bytex64 @MLE_online I almost replied that it also happens to be where Josh lives. 😂
@MLE_online I ❤️ how South San Jose Hills is north, south, east, and west of City of Industry and hundreds of miles from San Jose.
@mharbowy city of industry is an artificial abomination, so nothing is named in relation to it. That whole range of hills there is named after the former Rancho San Jose
